Great range of questions,
By Karin Stiles (Rochester, MN USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Complete Book of Questions: 1001 Conversation Starters for Any Occasion (Paperback)
Question: Do we really need yet another "Book of Questions"?Answer: Definitely YES, if it's this one. This book has 1001 questions, but unlike other books, I feel it has a MUCH broader range of questions. To help you navigate, they've been divided into 10 categories - from Light & Easy (Do you squeeze the toothpaste tube or roll it? What's the advantage of your method?) and Preferences (What's your favorite ice cream brand and flavor?) to Hard-Hitting (What's one regret you live with?) and From the Heart (When was the last time you cried? Why?) Because of the broad range, there are questions that are great ice-breakers for use with strangers or mere acquaintances, as well as "deeper" questions that can be used with closer friends. I should mention the last 2 categories are "Spiritually Speaking" and "Extreme Spiritual Matters." A portion of these questions refer to parts of Christianity (i.e., what do you think of Jesus Christ?) but many of them are about religious beliefs, prayer, God, etc. in general... This book has sparked some great conversations and I've already had to buy extra copies for friends who wanted them.

The Complete Book of Questions; 1001 conversation starters,
By Pastrygirl "Sandy" (Cincinnati, Ohio) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Complete Book of Questions: 1001 Conversation Starters for Any Occasion (Paperback)
I bought this book before leaving on a one week vacation to the beach with my boyfriend of eight months, knowing that we would be driving twelve hours each way. He is not a person who willinging gives up information, not a chatty person by nature. And as a shy person, I never know what to ask in order to get a conversation going. In the past, a friend had given me a set of conversation flashcards that worked well to get conversations started and I had learned alot about my sweetie. So, I thought a book like this would work well for conversation starters. And I was right!!!! The subjects range from light and airy to deep and spiritual. I found that browsing the sections for questions that interested me, brought amazing revelations about the person I thought I knew!! Obviously, there are certain questions any couple may want to avoid, especially after a divorce, but, the book gives you an automony to ask questions you might not have had the courage to ask before. And, to my surprise, when it was my turn to drive, about 30 minutes into the drive, he picked up the book and looked for questions for me!!!!! Now, I have a greater knowledge of life situations that my man has gone through, his views on things and opinions. A half dozen questions out of this book was all we needed to open up subjects that had never been contemplated and kept us engaged in interesting, light hearted conversation for many hours. I definitely would recommend this book for anyone wanting an avenue to getting to know another person without them feeling they are being "interrogated" !!!!!!

This book was recommended to me by some friends. I keep it on my coffee table and I can't tell you how many people will pick it up and start throwing out questions to others in the room. Not only does it get people talking but it also makes you think about what you might do in certain situations, what your thoughts are on various subjects, etc.

This book is OK. With 1001 questions, there will be at least some that you find useful. My quarrel with this book is that it doesn't advertise itself as being evangelical Christian, but in many ways it is. It has two separate sections of spiritual questions, and a large percentage of them seem to presume that you are an evangelical already. There are two or three token questions about non-Christian religions and perspectives, out of 200.This carries over in other ways. Most glaring - there are very few questions about dating and romance, no questions about sex and sexuality at all, and no questions about drinking and drug use. At least some of us find these topics make for juicy conversation, at least under the right circumstances. I wish the author had been more upfront about his biases.

You Can't Look for Answers Without the Questions,
By Mike King (Tampa, FL USA) - See all my reviews

I initially planned to buy this book as a conversation starter. Thumbing through it, something interesting happened. I realized that the questions got me thinking about how I felt; before I knew it, I was learning some interesting things about MYSELF.
Coming to terms with who you are and how you think/feel about certain things positions you to have meaningful discussions with others. Needless to say, I continue to enjoy Garry's book.

As a discussion group facilitator, I am always trying to find new tools to help 'bring people out'. This new book by Garry Poole is terrific. He has 10 categories of 1001 questions useful for any group situation - including 'Light & Easy', 'Blast from the Past', and 'Spiritually Speaking'. It is similar to Jerry Jones' '201 Questions' - but offers a bit more for discussion organizers such as myself who could always use new ideas.

I got this book to use for a discussion group of Mothers Of PreSchoolers, and found that it works for any group of people. To get familiar with it, I took it on a family vacation. We picked it up while waiting for a craft show to open and three generations of my family had a great time. Plenty of good questions for our ages, 34-82 years old. We enjoyed the book and each other's company and the time went by very quickly. I think it would even be good for my kids, as long as you pull only appropriate questions.

this book is great! and it's not just for people who don't know how to start a conversation. the range of questions in this book is fantastic! it covers quirky topics that you may not think to ask the people that are closest to you (but you'll find that the answers are interesting to know). and it goes all the way to in-depth questions that probe more serious, deep matters. i gave it to my best friend to her birthday, and she takes it everywhere! she'll get it out at a restaurant and start asking questions to the server or anyone nearby. it's great for long car rides or just any old time. it can also be a great way to ask questions to people that you wouldn't normally feel comfortable talking to in such a way--parents, for example.
i think this book is great for anyone! it's even fun to read on your own and think about your own answers to these questions. it makes a great gift...people love picking up this book and flipping through its pages to find a great question to ask the group. it's not just a way to get to know strangers...you can even learn things about people you've known for years!

In an age where plain old table conversation is harder to come by than ever, this book comes through with flying colors. The questions are just the right temperature for family consumption. We had a great time using this book during the Holidays and it really helped us to bond as a family.

My husband and I sit down with this every once in a while and pick out questions to ask each other. It's a great way to learn more about your spouse and spend time communicating instead of watching TV.
