Book Description

Complete Book of the Olympics October 25, 2001
The ultimate Olympic source book." (The Los Angeles Times)

"An extremely meticulous—one might even say Olympian—piece of scholarship." (The New York Times Book Review)

"A staggering compendium of results, highlights, and oddments dating from the first modern games . . . Few reference books qualify as good bedtime reading, but The Complete Book of the Olympics by David Wallechinsky is an exception." (The Wall Street Journal)

In this brand new updated edition of The Complete Book of the Winter Olympics, complete with thrilling photographs of the unforgettable moments from Olympic history, David Wallechinsky puts the Salt Lake City games into perspective with background, stories, and statistics from every Winter Olympics since the Chamonix games of 1924.

When the Salt Lake City Olympics opens on February 8, 2002, it will be the biggest Winter Games in history, with 10 new events and a record number of participating athletes and countries. Will the trend that has seen the United States Alpine Skiing shut out of gold medals at every Winter Games held in the United States continue, or will veterans Erik Schlopy and Picabo Street or some surprise upstart be able to topple the perennial favorites from Switzerland and Austria? Can anyone finally dislodge the Russians from the pinnacle of pairs figure skating success? Will there be another "Miracle on Ice"? This is the indispensable source for insights into these and many more gripping behind-the- scenes stories.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

David Wallechinsky is a compulsive listmaker. He first turned his eye to the Olympics in 1984, and has been updating his efforts ever since. This edition of The Complete Book of the Winter Olympics is a perfect companion to watching the games. Packed with results of every event ever contested, it adds just enough history, observation, and insight to assure another gold-medal performance. The Complete Book of the Winter Olympics 1998 is a bravura exercise in both the trivial and the pursuit of excellence. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

If you plan to watch or attend the games in Salt Lake City ...this book would be a good investment. -- The Arizona Republic

3.0 out of 5 stars Make sure this is the type of book you're looking for., January 25, 2002
By A Customer
I only gave this book three stars, because it wasn't what I was expecting. If you are looking for facts about each event, lists of past winners and history of the winter Olympics in general, this is the book for you. Wallechinsky has a near encyclopedic knowledge of the games. However, if you are looking for a book that is more of a guide/tour book to Salt Lake City and the 2002 winter Olympics, keep searching. I was looking for something that might have collated information on what Salt Lake had done to prepare and hints on how to get around, what events were going on in addition to the actual games, etc. His book is informative. It just isn't what I was looking for.

4.0 out of 5 stars very good, in-depth, March 23, 1998
By A Customer
Could contain more pictures, but a good book overall. Subject matter somewhat bland, however, the structure was great. A recommended selection!!!!
