Good, but not what I expected,
By LSNelson (Southern Oregon, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Complete Book of World History (Complete Books) (Paperback)
I thought this book would be like the other "Complete Book of..." series, like the Math, Science, Phonics, Money ones we have, or have seen. But, it is NOT! It is a wonderful resource book for world history, but NOT a workbook sort like the others, it has NO reproducible things, NO activities at all. It is nice for a timeline sort of book with the major events. If you are looking for a timeline resource book this should have 5 stars, but since it is not along the lines of the other Complete series I think it is misleading of the publishers.

Wonderful Junior World History Book,

I was absolutley delighted when this book arrived. It wasn't quite what I expected - it was far better!! It is not a workbook like the other books in the "Complete Book" series, but rather, a book for self-education and reading enjoyment. It covers world history from the beginning to the present, in language that is just right for the Grade 4 to 8 age groups. Each page has colour pictures to add to the attractiveness of the book, and each open spread is a complete lesson in itself. If you want to give your children a good general knowledge of the world, its people, and what has gone on in all the ages before they were born, then this is the book for them. I'm so glad I bought this book.

This was too hard for my 4th grader,

I bought this book to homeschool my 4th grader, and it was too difficult for him. I switched to the US History book from the same series, and that is working much better. If your child is an average student, then this book is more appropriate for grades 6-8 than the 4-8 listed.
As far as the series goes, I like the big pictures and the small sections. They make is easier to keep my child interested. I don't like that there are no test questions or real ways to see what he is retaining. I am having to create my own activities to go along with it and make my own tests and suppliment with library books, which is all very time consuming.

Good jumping off point,

We are happy with the book. Sure it doesn't cover EVERYTHING, but it gives us places to start that can be hard to find with other resources. Anything we want to explore further we can find by surfing the web or getting it at the library. We like to have a library for our 6 year old that has a little bit of everything, then we go from there. The book fits the bill.

Well done book. Gives just enough information for my 4th grader to be a good "extra" text - and ties in with other things that happened about the time of the entry, so they can research related topics. My 4th grader is really enjoying this one!

I was a little disappointed that the book did not have any reading comp. questions to help you follow thru with what you had read. The book itself is full of great facts and events, but I felt it would have been better if they would have added some review or comp questions.

This book was exactly what I was looking for. I gave it as a gift to my nephew who is in elementary school and just loves history. He found it to be very interesting and loves the illustrations. His parents think it is great that kids could be so enthusiatic in reading a book of this kind.

Very similar to Usborne World History in scope and sequence, but more narrative. There are 2-4 pages (usually just 2) on each topic. Moving from "Megalithic Europe" through "Egypt", "Pyramids and Gods, "The Jews", to "Phonecia and Assyria" in 8 pages. If you want a outline style or just overview of history this works well. It's easy enough to read for a fourth grader, and interesting enough for an 8th grader. I still prefer my Usborne Encyclopedia of World History though. You can't beat all of the cool internet links.

Good first step in history,

We read the History of the United States first and liked the short introductory passages. This book has better illustrations but there is so much history bunched into one volume that I doubt each topic will amount to more than a sound bite but we are not looking for knowledge, just exposure to people and events in history.
This approach works for kids who are more visual than verbal and would feel overwhelmed initially with a lot of text. The Complete Book of World History coupled with good documentary, should ease us into being able to look at primary sources and history books. |
