Editorial Reviews

Bowdoin, a small liberal arts college in Maine was the setting for this previously unreleased 1960 live performance. It was before the political upheavals and social revolutions that would rock college campuses only a few years later when much more of society synched with Seeger s ideals. A mixed crowd of young folkies, jazz fans, democrats & republicans, heard an exemplary mix of traditional, current topical songs, sea chanteys & world music tunes. Seeger also used this concert as the perfect opportunity to expose students to Lead Belly s music & even managed to get a couple of good digs at Congress. In today s terms, think the former lead singer of a top rock group playing your college.

The tapes of this concert went missing for more than 50 years. They present Pete Seeger at his very best in a live college concert setting. This set is almost a "greatest hits" compilation, not only of Seeger, but of the whole 1950s-1960s folk music scene. You get folk anthems like "Michael Row the Boat Ashore", hit parade items like "Goodnight Irene", polemics like "Bells of Rhymney", current event ditties like "What a Friend We Have in Congress" and "Quiz Show", plus virtuoso turns on banjo and 12-string guitar. Listen for a very early version of Seeger's anti-war ballad "Where Have All the Flowers Gone?" The fidelity is amazing, but do yourself a favor and play the set on a high quality sound system. You will hear it all, including Pete's foot tapping (stomping) to keep time. This is as close as you'll get to being in the house in March 1960.

I am so glad that I purchased this live concert from 1960. I already had 2 different double cd's of Pete Seeger's (A Link in the Chain/Columbia, and Where Have All the Flowers Gone - The Songs of Pete Seeger/Appleseed) plus a Greatest Hits cd of his from Columbia. The ability to hear him caught in a live concert, with all the audience whole heartedly joining in, is priceless. To often on a concert album, the singer or band tries to get the audience to sing along, and one has to listen to people struggle with the words and be behind on the timing. Not in this recording. The entire audience is singing along with him, and he's got them doing harmony, and you feel like you are right there in the concert hall. And yes, there are a fair number of his usual, well known songs, but also a good number of new tunes not in the usual compilations. Big thanks to Smithsonian Folways Recordings for putting this out.
If you like live concert albums, I can also recommend his Singalong in Sanders Theater album (1980) which I recently downloaded from iTunes. I made a playlist on my ipod of these two concerts from 1960 & 1980 and there is hardly a duplicate in nearly four hours of live material. And the audience in the Sanders theater were singing along just as heartily.

The importance and joy of this two-CD set is that it simultaneously captures our greatest folk performer at the peak of his limitless powers while presenting him in a typical setting. From the mid-50's into the early 60's, Seeger, no longer with the Weavers and blacklisted from mainstream work, was concertizing primarily at colleges and smaller clubs around the country. This date at Bowdoin is an excellent representation of those performances. Pete's banjo work is nothing short of stunning, and his unparalleled ability to connect with and engage an audience is on full display. The set contains many of the songs for which he is best known, but even longtime Seeger followers will find a good number of rarities here. All in all, an unqualified winner!

This CD is now streaming on NewFolkRadio.com. The CD brings back memories from the early days of folk music; the booklet enclosed in the CD is very detailed and provides insight into the production of the concert as well as full lyrics.

Here is one of the best concerts Pete Seeger recorded. A live performance, includes audience participation and applause. Pete at his best, inspirational, uplifting. A wonderful addition to my music cabinet!
