Every "50s" Capitol recording is here, with some alternate takes and a fabulous booklet by Dave Barbour, which is practically worth the price alone. What can you say... it's those fabulous Four Freshmen!!!

I own this set, though I didn't buy it from Amazon.com. It extends to the very first recordings they made for Capitol, including at least some of their demos. It's a 9-disc set that covers 1950-1960 and includes all of their singles and all of their studio albums recorded up through "The Freshman Year," as well as their live album" In Person" and the Four Freshmen vocal tracks from the Stan Kenton "Road Show" album. The booklet liner notes were written by a member of the original group, Ross Barbour.

Discs one through three includes their singles, and that includes material that was later compiled as their LPs "Voices in Modern," "Freshmen Favorites," "Freshmen Favorites Volume 2," and tracks on a Kenton LP "Stan Kenton -- Popular Favorites." Disc four begins with their first album of all-new studio recordings -- "Four Freshmen and Five Trumpets," released in 1955. Disc eight ends with "The Freshman Year" a 1961 LP release recorded in 1960. Disc nine contains the 1958 "In Person" live album and the 1959 live recordings issued on the 1960 "Road Show" LP.

There are no alternates, whether as a means of keeping the set of manageable size, a decision that alternates were not different enough to be of interest, or possibly no alternates having been retained.

Aside from a 1961 compilation "Best of the Four Freshmen," The group made seven more albums for Capitol from 1961 through 1964. (Then a fallow period relieved by a 1967 Coronet LP, and then five Liberty albums starting in 1968.
