"Guaranteed to help your beloved pet live a happier, healthier, fuller life. While this comprehensive and groundbreaking book presents cutting edge medical information, Shojai makes sure that it's proven and practical. Captivating true storeis of 'successful agers' will motivate you to make sure you give your pets the best care possible." --Dr. Marty Becker, resident veterinarian on Good Morning America and best-selling author

From the Author

Hey there, thanks for finding me on Author Central--and it appears we have "cat love" in common! I currently live with an 18-years-young Siamese wannabe and cherish every day that I have her. Like you, I want my cats to live long, happy and healthy lives and as they age; it's vital to recognize when they need help. Of course, the veterinarian is a key partner for your pets' health care, but YOU can do so much to keep your cats emotionally healthy and assist in their physical well being.

That's why I wrote COMPLETE CARE FOR YOUR AGING CAT. Even 20 or 30 years wouldn't be enough time to spend with a beloved feline--and we want a pets' golden years to be as happy as possible. So the book contains actionable advice. It's not simply a "go to the vet" book, although that of course is important. I want to empower you to recognize both healthy cat and problem cat issues, learn how to help your kitty yourself, and promote a positive pet partnership with your other care-givers including the vet.

This book is a companion volume to COMPLETE CARE FOR YOUR AGING DOG, which covers old-age issues for your canine companion. At the other end of the spectrum, I've also written COMPLETE KITTEN CARE and COMPLETE PUPPY CARE, part of my list of 30+ pet care titles.

I highly recommend this wonderful book for owners of adult cats of any age. The information is very well presented, complete, and useful to any cat owner. I would definitely recommend that a cat owner have this knowledge BEFORE their cat is old so they can be informed and prepared what to look for in their cat and get proper supportive care before the cat is too ill.

I also think it's fascinating to know that there are certain conditions found in specific breeds. This would help anyone who would want to acquire a cat in the future to be informed about everything they would need to know about the breed they're considering.

Huge kudos to Amy Shojai for writing "Caring For Your Aging Cat."

Cats are living longer and there's more advanced care available for them. This book clearly talks about all the issues related to the older cat. It has something for everyone in that it give details about complicated information (such as cellular aging) which will be read with interest by those who have some knowledge about cats....but it also explaine things in simpler language for the lay-person.
This book is a must read for all people who cherish their cats and want to make their cats' golden years more comfortable.

Amy Shojai has written perhaps her best work with this book--a touching, caring, hopeful tribute to the aging pet. We who are pet lovers have to face that there will be an end to our beloved pets' lives, but Shojai's book combines practical advice and emotional support to help ensure your aging cat lives out the rest of her days in comfort and happiness. Including chapters on nutrition, exercise, play, and that last sad choice we are sometimes forced to make--euthanasia--Complete Care for Your Aging Cat is a vital addition to any pet lover's bookshelf.
Amy Shojai is an author with a heart, as well as a brain. Her books reflect her love and passion for the animals in our lives, while giving us the advice we need to keep them healthy and happy.

Format: Paperback
Cats are living longer than ever before. More cats are being kept exclusively indoors, thus avoiding many of the health risks encountered by outdoor cats. More and more cat owners are understanding the importance of a healthy, species-appropriate diet as a foundation for good health. Advances in veterinary medicine now allow cat owners to pursue sophisticated treatments for diseases that would have been a death sentence in the past. But older cats (most commonly defined as cats age seven and older) have special needs when it comes to maintaining their health.

Amy Shojai's Complete Care for Your Aging Cat was first published in 2003 and quickly became the "old cat bible." However, seven years is a long time when you're talking about health related topics. This newly released edition has been updated to reflect changes in veterinary medicine and includes a wealth of resources about treatment options, products and research, complete with links to websites when appropriate. The e-book version of the book includes hotlinks to relevant information.

This book is an invaluable resource for cat owners. Shojai covers basic information on how age affects your cat's body in great detail. She explains how to look for changes that might signal health problems in older cats (for an excerpt, read Amy's guest post Caring for Your Older Cat). She discusses home nursing care to help older cats through various health issues, and presents advanced care options and how to make informed choices, including a section on making end of life decisions which is presented with great sensitivity, yet covers all the facts a cat owner needs to know when faced with this difficult choice.

I share a home with two aging cats that I adore and this book is a tresure of information. If you love your cats you'll want to keep this book handy. Sometimes it's not easy to read because there are issues we'd rather not think of -but- we have to and it's best to be informed. Kitties deserve to have smart humans.
