A joy for cat lovers simply to page through,
By Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Complete Cat Owner's Manual: How to Raise a Happy, Healthy Cat (Paperback)
Now in a compact paperback edition, The Complete Cat Owner's Manual: How to Raise a Happy, Healthy Cat is an excellent guide written for cat lovers, cat caretakers, and prospective cat owners of all ages and backgrounds. Chapters discuss how to care for one's cat, the basics of good feline health care, what one needs to know if considering breeding or showing one's cat, and an extensive summary of cat breeds. Featuring beautiful full-color photographs on every page of man's favorite feline friends, The Complete Cat Owner's Manual is a joy for cat lovers simply to page through as well as a jam-packed repository of invaluable information. For example, The Complete Cat Owner's Manual warns that the following foods should never be fed to cats: chocolate (poisonous to cats and dogs), onions (can cause a blood disorder called Heinz-body anemia), raw fish/poultry/eggs (often carry bacteria or parasites, and can destroy important vitamins), bones (may splinter and cause choking or gastrointestinal perforations) or dog food (which is not nutritionally formulated for cats). Highly recommended.

Mostly very informative,

This review is from: The Complete Cat Owner's Manual (Hardcover)
This book is informative especially the parts where the author talks about grooming, caring, and raising a cat in general. I felt that it was a very educational book. I would suggest this book to other cat-lovers and anyone who would like to own a "all-in-one" book on cats. It includes how to care for them, feline history, and a guide to breeds. If you are just looking for a guide to breeds, I would suggest another one. As you can see from other reviews, the Bengal breed section is inaccurate, but if you're looking for a book on how to care for cats and a most accurate guide to breeds, this is the one.

Excellent information in most sections,

I loved this book because of the information prsented in most sections. How to Choose a cat, bringing it home, caring for it, health care, breeding and showing a cat, and the cat's long and storied history. There are also lots of good pictures and information. I also liked the section on different breeds and learned about the different "markings" with various cats. I volunteer part-time for a "cat rescue group" and wanted to familiarize myself with some of the "breeds" and mixes we come across and I have learned some interesting things from this book. I grew up with a cat and now have a much better idea of what my mom dealt with with that cat!My one concern with this book is the section on the Bengal breed. I have not ever owned one, but after looking at several other reviews of this book, it would appear the author is misinformed about this breed. Hence my 3-star rating of this book. Great information here for the most part; you may want to read the section on different breeds with a cautious eye.

Filled with factually incorrect statements,

This review is from: The Complete Cat Owner's Manual (Hardcover)
Wow. What a disappointment. "Mistakes" were made in descriptions of several breeds, not just the Bengal. I found little to no objectivity in this book's breed descriptions. One questions where the author got her information. Poorly researched, no wonder the breeders and other cat lovers are upset about this. The only nice thing about it was it had lots of great pictures. If you must buy this book, definitely wait for the revised edition. Hopefully that one will be based on fact rather than politically-charged legends. There are dozens of better choices right now.

This book has beautiful pictures and great discriptions of the cat breeds. I love Bengal cats and did not feel as if the auther did the breed injustice. The auther is obviosly very well educated when it comes to cats. Keep up the good work!!

not a good or correct report on the bengal,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Complete Cat Owner's Manual (Hardcover)
This book is very pretty, with a lot of good pictures, but it does a great deal of harm to the bengal breed. It is simply not true! This breed is a "totally domestic cat" not a wildcat, as Ms. Page states. It also does not attack, but is just the opposite, as both of my bengals will meet strangers at the door and greet them, with a purr, not a growl. They are wonderful, playful and beautiful cats, that also do not have "urine that is so strong-it will drive other cats out", but have urine that smells like any other cat's s urine. Mine get along with other cats and got along with our chow, very well. The part of the book on the bengal is supposed to be corrected by Iams, who gave it an endorsement, and if that is done, perhaps it will salvage the horrible job she did on reviewing the bengal breed. She has obviously never been around a bengal, and it makes me wonder--if she made this error on the bengal, how many other errors are in her book? For us, after having two bengals, we would not even consider having another breed of cat.

bengal cats,

This review is from: The Complete Cat Owner's Manual (Hardcover)
I am amazed that this author did not do her homework, obviously! We have two bengal cats and we are very happy to be "owned" by these beautiful cats--they do not have the terrible habits that the author says they do, nor does their urine smell horrible--we have a pound kitty that can outstink them, by leaps and bounds. It is really harmful to a breed, when someone who is a very uninformed person, takes it upon themself to discribe a breed that they know nothing about. These are not wildcats- but are domestic cats that are warm, loving and also very beautiful and very smart cats that have enriched their owners lives so much. I know that my husband and I would not even consider EVER getting another breed of cat, since we have had these two, as they put the other breeds we had personally had, to shame. They are very playful, intelligent, love water and love each other and are very attached to their owners, and they are both leash trained, plus the bonus--they like strangers, who come in the house--I know that most cats run away, but ours will run to meet them and climb into their laps and purr. This review of the bengal is totally inaccurate! Iam's is doing a correction to the part on the bengal, and when they do, it will probably be a good information book, but for now, I would not even consider buying it. Authors should check out what they are writing about, as I think this is a very important part of being a responsible writer. I can't imagine writing a cook book on recipes that I had never tasted or reviews on shows that I had not bothered to see--so I think the same thing applies to the books that are published. Why would anyone want a bengal, if her writing is correct? Just ask the people who own or breed bengals and they will tell you this is a misleading and totally incorrect information. I hope it is corrected soon.
