Howard & Moore's Checklist of the Birds of the World,
By Robert G. Black (Lafayette, California USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: A Complete Checklist of Birds of the World, Second Edition (Hardcover)
This is the first checklist since James L. Peters checklist was completed by ornithologists after his death that includes the names of avian subspecies known at the time of printing. Though the name alone is entered, with no credits or source listed, this is still the only volume that brings the lists of avian species and subspecies current through the mid-1990's. Howard & Moore's checklist is a valuable reference tool for any student with the need for a reasonably current listing of avian species and subspecies. The index is excellent and complete for all genera and species, but it does not index the subspecies. This is the only reason for the book's 4-star rating, rather than the 5-star rating it would otherwise deserve.
