This is one excellent book, like the name says: its the complete guide to coaching soccer systems and tactics. It explains to you the theory behind the moves and makes it easy for you to understand by providing graphics on ball and player movements, for example movements from those players, like Beckham and other teams. This book shows you the principles of attack, when to move, how and teaches the theory behind. Take in consideration that games are not constant and that principles learn will always change depending on the game play.
The book also cover the principles of defense, man-to-man marking, zonal defending, ball channeling, and team formations, e.g. 3-5-2. Apart from teaching system and tactics, it also teaches the coach on how to go ahead and pass on the message to his players so that they execute well. Its not all about showing and telling the players what moves to do, but to analyze the game and always, but always be conscious of his team-mates and that everybody makes the team win.

This is a book one should start with. LIKE IT!

As a kids soccer coach with no prior soccer experience, I found this book very helpful and very clearly written. I recommend it highly.

Great book for youth coaches particularly those transitioning from small side games to 11-a-side.

The first section covers general principles of offence, defence and team shape.

The second section, "Systems of Play" reviews defensive systems (zone/man/press) and team shape (4-4-2 etc.) discussing the principles behind each and the benefits/drawbacks. In my view this is the core of the book. It's well explained and supported with diagrams throughout.

The third section discusses coaching methods with drills to illustrate how to move your team towards your tactical goal. Although the author views this as the most important part of the book, depending upon your level of training as a coach you may not find this as useful. There's good information there though and the same can be said for the final section on a variety of topics such as "Throw Ins" and "The Offside Trap".

If you're looking for a book that will help you analyze and implement tactical systems at the team level I'd strongly recommend this book.

The writing is spare and to the point. You will come away with a good understanding of basic formations, why they are played and how they are countered. There is a discussion of shape and plenty of time spent explaining positions and roles. The book relies very heavily on diagrams which are not all that easy to read. If you are accessing this book via e-reader the pages of text won't necessarily be adjacent to these diagrams. That means lots of flipping back and forth and the book certainly loses its power here. The target audience is the coach rather than the player because this is all about tactics rather than skill improvement. There are drills and small sided practice plans here as well but I didn't encounter anything that I haven't seen in other coaching books. The real value of this book has been to put formation and shape into a larger context as the framework for your coaching philosophy.

It is good, but I would say it is for the more advanced game, and the youth game may suffer if you focus on these tactics more than on footskills for the younger players. The part I like is the list of concepts for defending and attacking. This is what I hope that my daughter could imprint into her head.

This book is a great overview of the systems of play in soccer and the way to implement them with youth players. So many books contain technical drills, but this concise view of tactics is a really great reminder about the importance of a good system that puts your players in a position to be successful.

I have made considerable progress as a coach. This is a must have for any serious coach who is looking to dive into a introduction to tactics.
