The book also cover the principles of defense, man-to-man marking, zonal defending, ball channeling, and team formations, e.g. 3-5-2. Apart from teaching system and tactics, it also teaches the coach on how to go ahead and pass on the message to his players so that they execute well. Its not all about showing and telling the players what moves to do, but to analyze the game and always, but always be conscious of his team-mates and that everybody makes the team win.
This is a book one should start with. LIKE IT!
The first section covers general principles of offence, defence and team shape.
The second section, "Systems of Play" reviews defensive systems (zone/man/press) and team shape (4-4-2 etc.) discussing the principles behind each and the benefits/drawbacks. In my view this is the core of the book. It's well explained and supported with diagrams throughout.
The third section discusses coaching methods with drills to illustrate how to move your team towards your tactical goal. Although the author views this as the most important part of the book, depending upon your level of training as a coach you may not find this as useful. There's good information there though and the same can be said for the final section on a variety of topics such as "Throw Ins" and "The Offside Trap".
If you're looking for a book that will help you analyze and implement tactical systems at the team level I'd strongly recommend this book.
I have made considerable progress as a coach. This is a must have for any serious coach who is looking to dive into a introduction to tactics.
