About the Author

Sebastian Schutze was a longtime research fellow at the Bibliotheca Hertziana (Max Planck Institute for Art History) in Rome and currently holds the Bader Chair in southern baroque art at Queen's University, Kingston. He has published widely on Italian art and culture in the early modern era and is a member of the scientific board of the Italian Institute for Philosophical Studies in Naples.

This is one of those spectacular books that makes you appreciate what a real book is! The books of Hamilton's collection of Greek vases - which convinced Wincklemann of the superiority of Greek art, inspired Wedgwood and were a linchpin of the Greek Revival - have been begging for a reprint, and this is a beautiful copy. Its HUGE, so it's going to need a table rather than a shelf - particularly if you pair it with Napoleon's 'Description of Egypt'!
One concern though is that the inspection copy I've seen is actually coming apart at the seams - possibly a comment on the number of people who've leapt on it rather than the binding quality...?

This book on your coffee table, library shelf, or lecturn is a style statement unto itself. It is also a scholarly reference for the amazing pottery collection (now dispered) of one fabulous collector. The illustrations are marvelous and worthy of attention in their own right.
