This 5-CD set, presently available in the U.S.A. (as of early July 2011) only direct from Sony Music, combines the 3 "Return to Forever" Columbia albums "Romantic Warrior", "Musicmagic" & "Return to Forever-Live", all newly remastered and sounding great. It is also notable, that for the first time ever "Return to Forever-Live" is being presented complete(as on the original 1978 4-L.P. set) as a 3-CD set, as opposed to the edited 2-CD version previously offered. On the 2-CD edited version, "The Musician" and "So Long Mickey Mouse" had been edited to half their original length. While the booklet included in this CD box set boasts that it reproduces the booklet from the original 4-L.P. box set, unfortunately it reproduces that booklet in black & white instead of the original color. I think that Sony Music could have afforded the color ink for a $50 box set.

I should also advise you, that immediately on obtaining this box set, you should store the 3 discs from "Return to Forever-Live" in regular slim cases or jewel box, or if you can obtain them, anti-static inner sleeves(which I obtain from Japan). For some reason(though it is not an issue for the cardboard album cover replica sleeves for "Romantic Warrior" & "Musicmagic", the 3-panel sleeve for "Return to Forever-Live" has been made from a paper stock which will rapidly scratch the discs. Suffice to say that after removing and reinserting the discs from the packaging a mere 4 times, two of the discs(originally in perfect condition) are now quite visibly scratched(though still playable). I am now storing them in Japanese anti-static inner sleeves, and not reinserting them into Sony's packaging. Some day, I'll send the two discs out to a resurfacing company. Those of us who are collectors care about getting the discs in good condition.

If you are reading this you are probably a fan. But maybe you did not get to hear the 4 lp set when it came out in the seventies (or it's various cd editions afterwards). They were always Japanese, hard to get or incomplete. So here is your chance to listen to this energetic big band version of Return to Forever. Don't miss it! The other 2 cds have been available and are also great.

There are two flaws in this -- the crap packaging of the live album, and the fact that "The Endless Night" on the live album starts in the middle of the track "Opening 77" again and wasn't fixed from the previous 2 CD set. This is easily fixed by ripping though.

One would think that venerated label as Colombia would put forth a better product .I bought the complete Columbia collection of " Return to Forever" specifically to get the complete live album. Though "Romantic Warrior" was impeccably remastered, the live in 1977 sounds like it came from the original batch of compact discs in 1980. The sound is muddy, unclear and not pleasant to hear conversely Romantic warrior sounded great. The sound here betrays the music. One would think Columbia would have done more than slap a new essay and put a box around this collection and call it "complete".You can put lipstick on a hog but its still a pig. I for one was disappointed.

let me strongly second mr cohen`s statement about the packaging.one of the live discs had visible scratches, although it played fine.other than that, great music at a very appealing price for all that music.
