Although beautifully illustrated, this book was a disappointment to me. I am a beginner when it comes to flowers and plants, and expected this title to have somewhat detailed information on how to actually take care of the plants, flowers, herbs and vegetables described therein, once they have been planted in a container. The book does not. Instead it provides somewhat general instructions on how to prepare a container for use with a plant, then shows how to arrange the plant in the container. After that, you're pretty much on your own.

Add to this the fact that this is a British publication. Not normally an issue, but in this case some of the terms and products used in the guide are unknown here in the US, and therefore it is not easy to follow the directions or understand what the author is trying to tell me to do.

Overall, it is a nice little volume if you already know a bit about gardening in general and just want some pointers on using containers. However, a beginner such as I will not benefit greatly from it. I'll probably return the book.

Living in an apartment with only a balcony limits what one can grow. This book has beautiful ideas for such conditions and it is really well put together. The step by step instructions with pictures are excellent. Great book!

This book starts with the basic techniques: sowing seeds, choosing containers, watering, etc. It gets more in-depth with the care of houseplants, troubleshooting plant problems and how to do plant division.
The plant guide includes a variety like cyclamen, dracina, monstera, asparagus fern and gardenias.
There are sample planter combinations shown and the reader is told how to achieve that look. The samples include an herb garden container, one with winter colors, wild strawberries, cottage gardens, and a medley of pinks.
Great variety, so I rate the book with 5 stars.
