4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent English Style IPA
I purchased this kit from Amazon and it gives you everything you need to make a decent English style IPA. I went to the Coopers website and found an alternate recipe which ups the ABV and taste. Compared to American style IPAs this is significantly less hoppy and more malty & fruity tasting. It reminds me of New Castle and Bass Ale with a little more hop bitterness. The...

1.0 out of 5 stars Confusing & TASTES AWFUL
I purchased this kit to make my first batch of homebrew, and I really wish I hadn't. I hoped that using a kit would eliminate a lot of the measuring, calculations, and judgment calls necessary when brewing, but that wasn't my experience. The directions were vague ("add dextrose to taste"). They also flew in the face of the advice every homebrew book I've read provides...

The hop presence is there but it is very subdued. Out of the Coopers kits I have brewed so far, I liked this one the best and I think it can be a good base for customization. If I had any recommendations to customize it, I would dry hop this kit with 2oz of cascade hops for aroma.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent I.PA., August 8, 2011

This was the second Coopers beer I had tried. At first I thought I had done something wrong. The beer had a very harsh bitter aftertaste and was not very good at all. Most of the recommended waiting times are ok, but I have found if you wait around three to five months this beer turns out great! It has now totally smoothed out and tastes like a good ale should. The only recommendation I have is to dry hop with 2oz hops with a good fruity hops such as falconers flight. This sends a strong citrus hoppy flavor. Tastes great!

I have been home brewing now for almost 3 years. I have been using the Coopers home brew kits since I started and never had a bad batch. Coopers make home brewing as easy as it can be and I have at this point I have made over a 100 gallons of beer. I really like this IPA as a matter of fact I am drinking one as I am writing this review. It taste better than most beers I can buy at my local store and the pride of having made the brew you drink. This is my second favorite kit that Coopers makes. My number one vote goes to their Wheat Beer.

1.0 out of 5 stars Confusing & TASTES AWFUL, January 19, 2011
This review is from: Complete Coopers Brewery IPA Beer Kit Package (Misc.)
They also flew in the face of the advice every homebrew book I've read provides (they all recommend not adding sugars to your extract brew). It took me a while to figure out what each of the ingredients were, how much to use, and in what way. I would recommend skipping the kit and following a basic recipe. It'll be less heart-ache and probably less expensive.

After waiting weeks for my first batch, it turned out terribly, sour, bitter, no hop flavor. I asked several veteran homebrewers what they thought went wrong, and the resounding response was: bad ingredients. It was clearly old, and hopped extract is almost always terrible.

I cannot believe I paid nearly $40 for a substandard kit. If you're new to this, know that you should be paying around $20 - $30 for a good kit, with fresh ingredients.
