5.0 out of 5 stars A complete course in a book!, May 13, 2008

This review is from: Complete Crochet: Techniques and Projects (Spiral-bound)
If you crochet, Complete Crochet belongs in your craft library. If you don't have a craft library, this book would be an excellent start.

The instructions here are very clear, and ultimately can take you from beginner to expert as you work on each of the twenty-five designs. If you are new to crochet, your skill and confidence will build so that you will be able to personalize any of these projects and make them your own.

Bags, leg-warmers, afghans, ponchos -- you'll be able to create them all with confidence and never be bored with your skill level again.

If you have a crafty friend, this would make a wonderful gift.

2.0 out of 5 stars interesting stitches, April 14, 2011
This review is from: Complete Crochet: Techniques and Projects (Spiral-bound)
The patterns in this book are for expensive yarn. I don't like it when a person writes a book and doesn't give you other options for yarn. I can't afford mohair! It does have some cute stitch patterns in the back of the book that I have not seen before. If you can get the book cheap enough, get it for the stitch patterns in the back of the book, not for the impossible patterns.

2.0 out of 5 stars Unclear for beginners, October 7, 2009
This review is from: Complete Crochet: Techniques and Projects (Spiral-bound)
Flipping through at the bookstore, this was the book I thought would be able to teach me the most about crochet from the ground up, with its detailed color pictures and decently modern patterns. Upon trying, with no background knowledge of crochet except its finished product, I found the instructions to be unclear, the pretty pictures either at a horrible spot in the step or missing information altogether. After spending hours poring over how to do the most basic of stitches, I finally had to resort to the internet and instructional videos to figure it out. The book illustrates only one thread being used when joining a stitch to a chain, making rows pretty much ugly. Upon reaching the row area, I was completely confused by the turning stitch. The only advice was on how to join the different stitches to the chain, no mention of how to crochet a row on top of another row. I gave up on the book at that point. To be honest, I would have considered myself a crocheting failure and given up if I had relied only on this book, but thankfully I found Stitch 'N Bitch Crochet: The Happy Hooker. Speaking from the instruction half only, save your money. There are better books out there.
