Book Description

February 2002

"Mode O'Day and Her Pals" includes all of Crumb's contributions to Weirdo #9-15, his first experiments with brush, the first Mode O'Day stories, the first collaboration with Bukowski, "Psychopathia Sexualis" and more!

The definitive, comprehensive series reprinting Crumb's published career enters the mid-1980s with this 15th volume, a period that many critics consider to be the richest of Crumb's career. Anchored by Crumb's contributions to the seminal anthology Weirdo, created and edited by Crumb, this volume includes the first several appearances of classic Crumb character Mode O' Day, the networking fashion plate that serves as a foil for some of Crumb's most biting satire about America's cultural "elite." Other Weirdo highlights include Crumb's fascinating adaptation of Dr. R. Von Krafft-Ebing's "Psychopathia Sexualis," and "Where Has it Gone, all the Beautiful Music of Our Grandparents?", two stories often-cited as being amongst Crumb's very best work. The Weirdo section wraps up with yet another classic, "The Religious Experience of Philip K. Dick," which chronicles the last years of the highly-regarded science-fiction writer who experienced an intense vision of the apocalypse and believed that he was possessed by the spirit of Elijah.

Also included are Crumb's first collaborations with the late writer Charles Bukowski, including the chapbook "Bring Me Your Love," as well as several collaborations with Harvey Pekar from his autobiographical series American Splendor. The book is rounded out with a color section that includes rare album art for various jazz and blues greats, as well reproductions of his various comic book covers from this period. Crumb is the most revealing of all artists, and The Complete Crumb Comics leaves no stone unturned. Featuring a lengthy introduction by Peter Bagge. 16 pages of color; black-and-white comics throughout

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

The latest volume of everything underground comics creator Crumb has done consists largely of his contributions to Weirdo, the comics magazine he edited in the '80s. A good chunk of the book is devoted to stories of a lesser Crumb character, the one-note poseur Mode O'day. Fortunately, it also includes generous representations of stronger work--collaborations with writer Harvey Pekar, autobiographical efforts (including a "jam" with his wife, Aline Kominsky-Crumb), a jeremiad against contemporary culture ("Where Has It Gone, All the Beautiful Music of Our Grandparents?"), illustrations for books by Charles Bukowski and Edward Abbey, and a generous color portfolio of Weirdo covers and record-album jackets. Best of all is Crumb's affectionate biographical story of delta-blues legend Charlie Patton. Crumb can no longer be considered an underground cartoonist by any stretch of the imagination; thanks largely to the acclaimed documentary film Crumb, he might just be the nation's best-known cartoonist. That means libraries can expect demand for this as well as the other volumes in the series. Gordon Flagg

This review is from: The Complete Crumb Comics, Vol. 15: Mode O'Day (Paperback)
Crumb is in rare form here. His social commentary is unequalled. All the cool Weirdo stories in one book! I read this stuff for the first time, and what a treat. The Mode O'day stories are the funniest things I've read in years. Buy it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Social commentary and raunchy behavior, February 5, 2002
This review is from: The Complete Crumb Comics, Vol. 15: Mode O'Day (Paperback)
Fans of Crumb's biting comics of social commentary and raunchy behavior will find this set of comics continues the chronological series covering his complete work. Here Mode O'Day and Her Pals are the feature, covering his cartoons from 1983-85. A centerfold of fine color images provides lively full-page panels; most of the presentation is in classic black and white.
