Book Description

April 27, 2007 0750682140 978-0750682145
This book provides instruction on how to use the OrCAD design suite to design and manufacture printed circuit boards. The book is written for both students and practicing engineers who need a quick tutorial on how to use the software and who need in-depth knowledge of the capabilities and limitations of the software package.

There are two goals the book aims to reach:
The primary goal is to show the reader how to design a PCB using OrCAD Capture and OrCAD Layout. Capture is used to build the schematic diagram of the circuit, and Layout is used to design the circuit board so that it can be manufactured.
The secondary goal is to show the reader how to add PSpice simulation capabilities to the design, and how to develop custom schematic parts, footprints and PSpice models. Often times separate designs are produced for documentation, simulation and board fabrication. This book shows how to perform all three functions from the same schematic design. This approach saves time and money and ensures continuity between the design and the manufactured product.

· Information is presented in the exact order a circuit and PCB are designed
· Straightforward, realistic examples present the how and why the designs work, providing a comprehensive toolset for understanding the OrCAD software
· Introduction to the IPC, JEDEC, and IEEE standards relating to PCB design
· Full-color interior and extensive illustrations allow readers to learn features of the product in the most realistic manner possible
· FREE CD containing the OrCAD demo version and design files

Review

"I've found this book to be very helpful and exactly what I've been looking for. Kraig Mitzner has done a wonderful job of covering the full spectrum of printed circuit board fabrication. The content spans not only the OrCAD Layout software, but the physical process of PCB fabrication and advanced topics such as RF issues."

5.0 out of 5 stars My review, June 14, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Complete PCB Design Using OrCad Capture and Layout (Paperback)
This book is great if you've got little experience with OrCAD's Layout and Capture software. It's also a really good go-between if you've played with the software, but don't really want to sit down and read the lengthy technical user's guide for the software. Beyond that, it also gives answers questions about the how's and why's of circuit board design that may be difficult to find outside of working in the industry or taking a class directly. Many outside sources and industry standards are referenced for further information if you need it too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Starter Book for Newer Orcad, May 5, 2007
This review is from: Complete PCB Design Using OrCad Capture and Layout (Paperback)
Most of the books for Orcad Layout and Capture software are many years out of date. This version covers version 10.5 (2006) and is essentially current for the newest version (15.7 for 2007)

It is an excellent book to introduce new users to Orcad Capture and the Orcad Layout SW packages. It does NOT cover Orcad PCB Editor which is completely different from Orcad Layout. (Layout has a very similar user interface to Capture while PCB Editor is based on Cadence Allegro PCB layout package)

It is also very useful for first time PCB layout customers as it goes into some of the reasons behind details such as spacing requirements, how library part dimensions are determined and how PCBs are physically constucted. This book does NOT go into all of the detailed options of all of the Layout and Capture commands, you have to use the built in technical manual for that. It does cover some of the common options.

I have purchased several copies to use in assisting with training new CAD operators on PCB layout and Schematic capture in general

4.0 out of 5 stars Five stars, but..., January 29, 2009
This review is from: Complete PCB Design Using OrCad Capture and Layout (Paperback)
Let me start by saying that the book is really good. I mean the level of detail here is just amazing. No matter which software you are using (Mentor, Eagle, Cadence) you will get a lot out of this book.

However, I did not give it 5 stars because of the following issues. I will list them and you can make up your own mind.

1. As another reviewer mentioned, "OrCad Layout" will no longer be supported. Cadence is moving toward PCB Editor for future products. This makes the book somewhat obsolete. However, for those who use OrCad < V16.0 this is perfectly fine. Also, if you read the book for the OrCad capture discussion, this is perfectly ok. Cadence uses Capture in all future versions. I can't blame the author for this. Many users are up in arms over it (just check the discussion boards).

2. This book is heavily oriented towards manual layout. SPECCTRA is mentioned in a very small section towards the end. This is a major omission. I mean OrCad includes one of the most powerful shape based autorouters and this is an afterthought in the book? Come on. Ever try to layout a board with 20-30 IC's (6-8 layers) by hand? Maybe if you're crazy. BIG thumbs down!

The book includes a student version of the software and I guess the author tried to make the book fit the capabilities of that (which is very limited). I question the wisdom behind this. I mean, dude, we have the grownup software already. We're past the "hand holding" stage and in the war. Help us out with all the bells and whistles.

Ok, I don't mind the intro stuff. I read through it because I might pick up something. But I need the advanced view as well. I need the "get down and dirty" stuff and I need lots of it.

I would like to see the author come out with a new book: "Complete PCB design Using Allegro Professional Products (OrCad Capture, PCB Editor, SPECCTRA and PSPICE A/D". He is a good writer. I know he can do it.

I, for one, would gladly pay double.

The book would probably grow to double the size as well. Here is a suggestion: I get most of my books as eBooks these days (Adobe digital editions). This is the kind of book that would really work in that format.

Please?

I'm done, tnx
