Contrary to what this says,vol.5 contains daily strips of Thimble Theatre from 1928-29.Those only familiar with the anmated Popeye will be quite surprised to learn that he began as a one-shot sailor for the story A Voyage to Dice Island. Castor Oyl and Ham Gravy were the main stars of Thimble theatre then.see how Popeye gradualy assumed star status,fell in love with Olive Oyl and became Castor's friend and companion.there is even a reference to the beginning of the Great Depression that year.(See the strip dated Oct.29, 1929)Popeye was much more humane and a lot funnier than any of the cartoons depicted him in later years.(Believe it or not,in this book there is absolutely no reference to spinach.)
