Book Description

February 17, 2006

John Peacock's Complete Fashion Sourcebook brings together all the drawings from his seven-volume Fashion Sourcebooks series.

The renowned costume drawings of John Peacock, charting the development of women's and men's clothing from the 1920s onward, now brought together in one volume.

This beautifully illustrated, easy-reference volume, with its year-by-year format, allows changes in fashion to be shown in fascinating detail: from the boyish silhouette of the 1920s and the sophisticated outlines of the 1930s through the plain utilitarian 1940s and the new femininity of the 1950s, to the radical styles of the 1960s, the vintage and ethnic trends of the 1970s, and the structured "power dressing" of the 1980s. Day wear, evening wear, sports and leisure wear, accessories, underwear, and wedding wear are all included, and complete descriptions of each garment accompany the drawings, itemizing color, cut, necklines, lapels, sleeves, pockets, fastenings, buttons, and belts.

The reference section includes a chart that summarizes the evolution of fashion and garment shapes through the decades, as well as biographies of outstanding designers of each era and a full bibliography. It will become an indispensable part of the library of fashion enthusiasts, historians, and collectors, and is sure to provide inspiration to any designer or student working in the performing arts.

5.0 out of 5 stars Extremely useful -- One of the best I've seen, August 23, 2006
This review is from: The Complete Fashion Sourcebook (Paperback)
This is a great resource for costume designers and anyone else wanting to capture the look of a particular period. The drawings are detailed and include men's and women's styles for each year from the 1920s to the 1980s. Examples include evening wear, daywear, sportswear, and even underwear and wedding fashions. Accessories (hats, shoes, handbags) are also pictured. Plenty can be learned just from looking at the pictures, although the descriptions that follow help to summarize the particulars of line, fabrics, etc. Very easy to use. I LOVE this book and will refer to it often in my work. I wish Peacock would do one for earlier fashions.

4.0 out of 5 stars great for beginners., December 14, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Complete Fashion Sourcebook (Paperback)
I think this is a good book for anyone to have in their collection especially as a beginning designer whether it be for the stage or in fashion. Everything is in order by decade and easy to find.

My only complaint is that this book, like many of the John Peacock books, does not contain original photos. They are all drawn/painted pictures and I like to have the occasional original photo to follow.

I also recommend his book on shoes and accessories for the same reason!
