****1/2 - perhaps the best of the four Fire and Enjoy albums,
By Docendo Discimus (Vita scholae) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Complete Fire & Enjoy Sessions, Pt. 4 (Audio CD)
Slide guitar master Elmore James' complete recordings for the Fire and Enjoy labels can be found on the superb box set "King Of The Slide Guitar", so there's really no good reason to get these four individual discs, which don't include anything not found on the box set (on the contrary, the box set has a total of 64 songs).
But if you really want to stack your shelf with Elmore discs, each of these four CDs are really good, and this one is perhaps the best, even if songs like "The Sky Is Crying" and "Dust My Broom aren't here. The Fire and Enjoy sessions were Elmore's last, and the sound is better than decent. The arrangements are Elmore's usual urban electric blues setup, drums, two guitars, bass, piano and usually a sax as well, and this volume is highlighted by the (rather humorous) "The Twelve Year Old Boy", the sizzling instrumental "Up Jumped Elmore [Black Snake Slide]", the rough, tough, and superbly funky "She's Got To Go", which features some great piano playing, and an alternate take on the sizzling "Look On Yonder Wall". Superb electric blues.
