Book Description

August 17, 2008

From the International Game Fish Association and expert Lindsey Philpott comes a clear visual guide to tying every fishing knot you'll ever need to know.

Whether you're fly-fishing, trolling, spinning, or surfcasting, your knots must hold well, be easy to remember, and help the lure to wriggle. The Complete Book of Fishing Knots, Leaders, and Lines teaches anglers the best way to tie reliable, workable knots. Knots you already know and unusual special-purpose knots are depicted in color photographs tied with thick monofilament, so you don't have to guess what each knot is really supposed to look like. There are descriptions of fifty knots, and tips to improve your tackle and simplify life for yourself—because the fish make fishing hard enough! The Complete Book of Fishing Knots, Leaders, and Lines also offers clear instructions for tying winning leaders, tips for selecting lines, and up-to-date information from the field that will bring you the quickest, slickest, and best catch ever. 150 color illustrations

More About the Author

Lindsey Philpott (1948 - ) was born in England, where he lived for thirty-three years, soaking up the English sunshine at every opportunity, growing vegetables and fruit in his Plympton home. He has a wife, Kim, and four children, David, Elizabeth, Nicholas and Benjamin - ask him about them! His own childhood days were spent sometimes on the north African continent, sometimes in England and on many later vacations spending time around the Mediterranean. His regular working life was started at the offices of the Exeter cathedral architects, where he learned the art and artistry of architecture and draughtsmanship. His first paid work was to sing in the choir of St. Andrew's in Plymouth. He later moved to Bristol, where he learned the exactitude of structural engineering, becoming the Area structural engineer for the PSA. He worked with his father, a lifelong civil engineer, learning how to deal with contractors and craftsmen as well as learning how to maneuver through the City Halls. He started his own small business as an architect and then moved to Bahrain in the Arabian Gulf for two years. He then emigrated to the USA where he has been ever since. His many moves, his many elements of career life and the exposure he has had to city, country and expatriate life have taught him that nothing is as easy as it first seems and that people are the most important element. Living and working with people is the greatest opportunity for learning. He has spent many years learning knotting, from the age of six onwards, and is now sharing some of that learned and acquired knowledge with all. His greatest thrill is to show young people how they can tie knots - he teaches knotting at the drop of a line or the merest note of a puzzle involving cords. He now edits the international magazine "Knotting Matters" for the International Guild of Knot Tyers, of which organization he has been a member since 1997. More is yet to come, so keep a weather eye open for the next installment in his career, his writing and his life.

Although not an expansive collection of every knot in the world, this book contains a library of many useful knots for nearly every fishing application. It's descriptions of the knots are clear and illustrated quite nicely. It certainly contains more knots than I would ever use in my lifetime.

If you're looking for every obscure knot in the universe, look elsewhere. If you want a simple description of knots with clear illustrations, then you've found a winner with this book. It's one that I will refer back to for many years.

3.0 out of 5 stars Complete Book of Fishing Knots, Lines, and Leaders, February 14, 2010

Nice book. BUT - I don't agree to be "complete" book for knots and information. Nice pictures, but again lack of knot varities or quantities. Some knots are complicated and don't show detail information or enough steps to finish the knot. They are missing some very good and important knots. Again - it's a good "not so comlete" book.

1.0 out of 5 stars Good info bad black on black pictures, June 3, 2011

In knot tying I would definitely say that a picture is worth 1,00 words. The pictures are horrible. They are in black and white which wouldn't be that bad, but they decided to use a black background along with black rope to show you how to tie a lot of the knots. You can't distinguish between the rope and the background half the time. I would not suggest wasting your money on this. You are better off googling the knots and learning them at home. They have way better animated videos on how to tie which ever knot you are looking for online.
