Pure genius!, March 6, 2005
This review is from: Complete Freak Brothers: V. 1 (Paperback)
OK, the intention was probably to make just another underground comic. However, that was *not* to be: Gilbert Shelton was just too much a comic genius to stay undiscovered. I think that the best thing is that he managed to reinvent himself, while staying true to his ideal, and create a comic that (almost) anybody can enjoy.
The early comics are a bit rougher on the edges, and the later ones are more streamlined mainstream. But, you can pick up just anyone and have fun. He also had the decency to stop writing when he was still on top of things. We had never to see a sad decline.
The adventures of the three dope addicts are just as hilarious as you can imagine. There is a certain nostalgia and romanticism of drugs, yes, but Shelton is mature enough to let us know of the bad side effects of drugs, and of the less than ideal world of the times. Don't despair however: he does it also in a funny way!
Try also the spin-off Fat Freddy's Cat - even funnier.

Head Shop Classic, June 9, 2011
This review is from: Complete Freak Brothers: V. 1 (Paperback)
This is the best overview of the history of the Freak Brothers Comics. Gilbert Shelton & Company live up to their legendary status with the continuing adventures of the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers; Fat Freddy sells dope at Disneyland, while Freewheelin' Franklin & Phineas get rejected by the Attitude Police & the sportcoat label inspectors while trying to gain entrance. Fat Freddy gets jumped by the local gangs while helping a couple of local under-age winos by pimping some banana ripple wine at the liquour store. The stories will have you in stitches for hours and hours. This is truly a headshop classic. Not to be missed by hardcore fans.
