To soul fans, Goldwax remains one of the pivotal labels of the era, introducing the world to artists of the calibre of OV Wright, James Carr and the Ovations. But Goldwax also recorded and issued first-rate country, blues and garage rock, as will be heard during the course of this series.
Many of the tracks featured across this and future volumes will be receiving their first-ever CD issue. The whole project has been endorsed by Goldwax founder Quinton Claunch, who has also provided reminiscences of several of the more obscure artists that are featured.
Featuring copious single-by-single annotation, and with a shot of at least one side of every 45 thats featured in the set, this package is guaranteed to grab significant media attention in the wake of Aces ongoing success with the 3CD Take Me To The River: A Southern Soul Story project.

SOME GOOD MUSIC FROM THIS SMALL LABEL,

Two discs 75 and 71 minutes each approximately. The sound has been remastered and is clean yet has some of the warmth of the original releases. The booklet has information on each track and there is a color photograph of each of the singles in this collection. This is the first of three collections of singles from this Memphis label, and it's subsidiaries.
Like many small labels, the music was dictated by the owner's taste and what he thought might sell. This label is no exception. Tracks range from the fairly silly ("Big Bad Jon The Twister"),to songs aimed at teens ("A Thousand Vows"),to topical songs ("The Day The World Cried Parts 1&2"),to some of the best relatively unheard soul music ("How A Woman Does Her Man",and many others),that could hold it's own with any label. There are well known artists here such as James Carr,O.V. Wright,The Ovations,Spencer Wiggins, and many others. But no matter who is singing, this is a good example of the talent that came from the southern U.S. (in this instance) that was being recorded, and some who went on to have fairly good careers. It's interesting that in listening to this collection, you get the feel of the times and how individualistic these small labels were. While not all tracks are stellar, the overall listening experience is very rewarding at the very least. At most, you get to hear some of the best relatively unknown soul singers from the era. The second volume of Goldwax singles should be released in the near future-helping give an even better picture of what this small label was releasing during the sixties. If your tastes run toward soul with a bit of grit mixed in-this is for you.

Great music for the R&B fan. You'll hear some unusual stuff. Sound quality good on most.
