The Great Pyr Bible,
By Marie (Franklin, MA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The New Complete Great Pyrenees (Hardcover)
I have owned this book for seven years, and it was what sold me on buying a Great Pyrenees. A Great Pyrenees is a wonderful breed, but not for everyone. Please read this book before buying a Great Pyrenees. I have read this book multiple times, for it is the "Great Pyrenees bible". Other Great Pyrenees books were of no value to me. Paul Strang's book has helped me better understand my big, walking "snowdrift".

A most informative book with plenty of photos worldwide,
By A Customer
This review is from: The New Complete Great Pyrenees (Hardcover)
I purchased this book having already owned a copy of the earlier edition. I noted photos and information had been updated from many countries however no request was received for updated information from New Zealand which for us was disappointing and I was re-reading the NZ segment from the first edition. Apart from that this book contains much history on the Breed, where the Pyrenean originated from, what he was used for and how he arrived from France his country of origin into other parts of the World. There are many beautiful photos, the 3 Standards are all detailed and the Health articles most informative. This book would be one of the most comprehensive books available on Pyreneans including much content on the Breeders' of yesteryear to whom the Breeders' of today owe so much. The chapters on breeding, selecting a puppy and grooming along with caring for your Pyrenean are invaluable to the person who may wish to own a Pyrenean one day and to the current Pyrenean owner. I would recommend this book to any Pyrenean enthusiast to add to their Library.

Excellent reference for novice or expert to the breed.,
This review is from: The New Complete Great Pyrenees (Hardcover)
Very interesting and full of history and details of the breed. Anyone new to the breed will learn more from this one book than you can find on the web, libraries, and bookstores - combined. If you're thinking of owning one of these dogs , this book will (innocently) do more than sell you on it, it will convince you it is the only breed. Wonderful historical re-counts, anecdotes, pictures galore, etc. Well worth every penny.

Very good but lacking in the training part. The book refers to other training books but those books talk about Dogs in general not about big dogs with traits like digging, barking, roaming, etc. Other than that the book is a good buy for all interested in buying a pyr. or those who have pyrs already. I recommend it.

Most up-to-date publication on the Pyr covers everything from Molosser ancestry through development in Europe to the Pyr's present day popularity in the US. Also includes in-depth discussions on choosing a puppy, training, care, etc. 256 pp. / many b/w photos-illus.

As a new owner of a 2-year old Great Pyr, I'm looking for useful information that will help me learn about and understand the breed's unique characteristics. The reviews of the book led me to believe I might find that kind of info here, but I was surprised to find that the majority of the book is about the origins of the breed in Europe and America. While interesting, that kind of info does not really help me on a practical level, for instance, in terms of training tips. I'm going to resell this book and keep looking.

Agree with some of the other reviewers regarding the majority of the book being specific to ancestry. That's fine if you're a breeder or on the show circuit. This books just skims the surface regarding temperament, behavior training, and the day to day experiences one can expect as an owner. Even if you don't use your Pyr as a "working dog," (you owners know what I mean) the Pyr is unique in their mixture of patience and self-direction. Not sure this book captures that essence. Pyrs are not suitable for everyone; they are more intelligent than many of us. They are, however, not Border Collies, and definitely not Labs.
A very nice book from an historic perspective, but it didn't take me deeper into the special chemistry that develops (or should) between Pyrs and their owners.
