Book Description

May 1999
Proverbs is the only book in the Bible devoted exclusively to the art of success. By citing both negative and positive rules of life, Proverbs clarifies wise and foolish choices in a host of situations. The central spiritual principle that will transform your life is the law of love.

"Pleasant words are like a honeycomb,
sweetness to the soul and health to the body."
-Proverbs 16.24

"Better is a dinner of vegetables where love is
than a fatted ox and hatred with it."
-Proverbs 15.17

The Complete Guide to the Book of Proverbs is the first Bible commentary in 2700 years to solve the ancient mysteries of the identities of Lady Wisdom, Solomon's secret ghost writer, the seven pillars of wisdom, the woman of noble character, Agur, Lemuel, and Lemuel's mother.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"A hefty and inexpensive treatment of the book of Proverbs, this volume provides commentary, maps, cross-references to other texts, and side-by-side comparisons of the various translations. Although an accessible tool for Bible students, I was immediately struck by its secular value for readers who want to understand the Bible as literature. The explanations are clear and easy to understand." -- Patricia J. Wagner, The Bloomsbury Review

"Cody Jones has written a very useful, well researched, and surprising guide to Proverbsyou'll be surprised at who really wrote it as well as how accessible this great wisdom literature can be." -- Denise Breton & Christopher Largent, authors of The Soul of Economics, The Paradigm Conspiracy, and Love, Soul and Freedom

"I fount this book to be a breath of fresh air! The Word of God is still alive, active, and relevant for living today." -- Timothy D. Terpening, Pastor Mandon Lake Community Church, White Lake MI

"The Complete Guide to the Book of Proverbs is fascinating and practical- the perfect antidote for those who believe the Bible is overwhelmingly complex or not pertinent to life today." -- Barbara Clevenger, Founding Minister Church of Today West, Novi MI

5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting and Very Readable, December 24, 1999
This review is from: The Complete Guide to the Book of Proverbs (Hardcover)
The author, Dr Cody L Jones, has obviously done his homework. This is no mere collection of proverbs, but is a serious 568-page work that is for both reading and reference. The first 23 pages include a list of charts, a guide to pronounciation, and an outline of the structure of Proverbs. Pages 25-256 are a commentary on Proverbs. The comments are interesting and very readable, and they put things into a historical setting. The book includes many historical drawings and photos to give the reader a sense of the culture of the time. The next section (pages 257-315) provides a topical guide to Proverbs, with 96 topics arranged alphabetically. Each topic is amplified by one or more verses. The third principal section (pages 317-545) offers the full texts of six different versions in parallel: New King James, New Revised Standard, New Century, New International, King James and New Living. While some versions are more orthodox and strictly translated, others are more readable; and the ability to see all six versions of a verse on the same page spread certainly is an aid to understanding. If this book piques your interest in the book of Proverbs-and it might-it is well worth the cover price. There is much wisdom to be gained in Proverbs and this tool can help you uncover it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Six parallel translations of Proverbs are especially useful, August 4, 2000
By
Randy Martens (Denver, Colorado) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Complete Guide to the Book of Proverbs (Hardcover)
The wisdom contained in Proverbs has always been of particularinterest to me, and through the years I've acquired a number of useful commentaries on the Book of Proverbs . And I must agree with what Cody Jones briefly touched upon in the introduction to his book - that all too many commentaries (both older and more modern ones) are entirely overly academic and rather arid in their treatments, which in most cases clearly are not intended to help the average person in the practical, day-to-day pursuit of wisdom.

I must say that I very much enjoy the format of Cody's new work, and consult it frequently on a daily basis since I've purchased it. What I've found especially useful is the six parallel translations of the Proverbs near the end of the book.

3.0 out of 5 stars A useful reference, BUT..., August 2, 2000
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Complete Guide to the Book of Proverbs (Hardcover)
In view of the glowing reports by other readers, I am reluctant to say so but, frankly, I am disappointed in this work. It is a useful reference, but I find it somewhat superficial in its treatment. I have found the older, more modest "Everyman's Bible Commentary" to provide a deeper analysis, and to better tie Proverbs to other scripture.
