5.0 out of 5 stars Great defensive system to control the tempo of a game!, October 19, 2009
This review is from: Complete Guide to Coaching Basketball's Match-Up Zone (Paperback)
As a head coach I love to run and gun and play fast. But in the 20+ years of my coaching career, I was not always a run and gun coach nor have my teams always had the point guards that could run an up tempo fast break attack.

On those years that we had to play slow, we needed a way to vary our man-to-man pressure defense, confuse the opponent, and force them to slow down their offensive pace in order to attack our defense.

Coach Paye's match-up zones as outlined in this book were a great equalizer on defense that allowed us to vary our defense yet keep many of our man-to-man principles. This overlap of defensive principles made it possible to play to defenses successfully.

Coach Paye describes the basic principles of his match-up zone system and then applies these principles to running a 2-3 zone, 1-3-1 zone and a 1-2-2 zone.

In addition to the detailed descriptions of executing the basic principles and each particular zone, the book is filled with detailed diagrams that not only detail the basic and common sets and slides the team must be able to execute, but also how to deal with the difficult coverages that good offensive coaches will force on a team that plays a match-up zone.

For the coach who is defensive guru, this is a must purchase. If you would like some insight into how to attack a match-up zone defense, this book is also useful.
