This book points out the common mistakes most student pilots commit and explains how to avoid them. Mr.Penglis offers excellent insight that will help you save embarrassment and valuable training time. His explanation of concepts is humorous with plenty of logical examples. You will hardly ever pause over explanations as they are presented very intuitively. This book is well-written and it takes the reader seriously. If you plan to take up Flight training or are dreaming to be in the cockpit, you must definitely obtain this book. It helped me immensely when I was in the process of obtaining my private pilot license out of Marshfield, MA.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy this book and read it again and again, August 31, 2002

I would highly recommend that anyone considering private pilot training buy this book. In a wry, cynical, style, Mr. Penglis offers some very clear and valuable insight to the many expensive pitfalls that await you.

Read it cover to cover before you invest a dime in training. Then, re-read each chapter as you reach that point in your flying career. I'm sure a few high profile instructor/examiner types would hate this book. It does not tell you what you want to hear about general aviation, it tells you what you need to hear!

4.0 out of 5 stars The Inside Info! (No-Fluff :), July 19, 2001

I found this book at my local library and it's been one of the few that I found hard to put down each night. I was flying out of a flight school and got my private but was wary of the expenses & the odds and ends that weren't fitting in. I then decided to be brave and went out looking at flying clubs and Mr.Penglis couldn't have been more right about "...the greatest characters in aviation reside at flying clubs". I found my Instrument Instructor at a flying club a little out of the way, but a retired and amicable USAF C141 instructor! I couldn't ask for more. I would say this book is an absolute MUST READ before you decide on your first school/club.

5.0 out of 5 stars If your going to be a pilot, read this book, April 5, 2000
This review is from: The Complete Guide to Flight Instruction (Paperback)
A complete guide indeed. The author takes you from zero hours through ATP and goes through all the pitfalls in between. If you are a student pilot or a professional you will laugh out loud at all the stupid things you do in flight instruction that he describes and find yourself saying "It's funny 'cause it's true"

5.0 out of 5 stars Full of valuable information, and a portion of humor, May 14, 2009
This review is from: The Complete Guide to Flight Instruction (Paperback)
When i first read this book i was working on my CFII (a little late i know), but the book is so well and easy written that i would recommend it to anybody who is starting their training or has worked as a flight instructor.

A lot of the material took me back to the start of my training. I found myself laughing many times just because i recognized my own attitudes when i first started to fly.

I like that the book goes into what is wrong in the educational system of aviation, and what we can do to "fix" this in the long run.
The FAA are put to their place in the book, and i believe that a few of the Gentlemen of the FSDO would benefit from reading this.

Nevertheless, the book is for beginners, those who are instructors or for the retired airline pilot who wants to have a good laugh and think back to easier times and old memories.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you fly or want to, you need to read this book., June 14, 2009

This review is from: The Complete Guide to Flight Instruction (Paperback)
I'm currently working on my instrument rating. After going through several instructors, I got rather disgruntled with the process. This book was recommended on a forum. I read it and was amazed at the things I learned.

Half of the book is dedicated to the private. I already had mine, but I still found a ton of good, useful information. The rest of the book covers advanced ratings, even up to getting your own CFI.

All of the information about the ratings and his tips are invaluable. However, the most valuable section is about choosing a CFI. I'd had bad luck with my couple previous CFI's and was assuming that I just didn't have what it takes. I followed the authors tips for selecting a CFI and finally found one that I could work with. Combined with his tips about IFR flying, I finished my requirements in little time and am taking the ride this coming weekend.

This book probably saved me 50 hours of flight training time getting my instrument ticket using inadequate CFI's. That's 7500 (at today's rates).

As I said in the title, If you fly or even if you think you want to:

BUY THIS BOOK AND READ IT COVER TO COVER.
