STAN DEFREITAS IS THE BEST FOR GARDENING! GREAT!!!,
By J. Deigo (St. Petersburg, Florida) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Complete Guide to Florida Gardening (Hardcover)
Im new to florida and got some advice from a friend about contacting my local Horticulture Extension Service, and when I told them I had dozens of questions about gardening and was looking for a self help guide to Florida Gardening, they had only name for me, "STAN DEFREITAS!" I thought one guy for entire state, come on? Well, after I bought the book I soon realized this guy put together a miniature enclyclopedia of do's and don'ts for The Entire State of Florida and it's easy to read. Before I plant it, I check with the book and I never have had problem! Enough said! A twenty dollar investment a the rest of my life a succesful gardener! Thanks Stan Way to Go!

NEED ONE FLORIDA GARDENING BOOK? MAKE IT THIS ONE,
This review is from: Complete Guide to Florida Gardening (Hardcover)
I've looked at, bought, perused many books on Florida gardening and this is one of the best. Technical enough yet informative for the layman. If you only have one book on Florida gardening, you can't beat this one for the price.

A good book for the Florida gardening novice.,
By Patrick M. Mitchell (pmmitchell@worldnet.att.net (Winter Park, FL) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Complete Guide to Florida Gardening (Hardcover)
This book is perhaps one of the most commonly available to Florida gardeners. For the novice, the book has an abundance of general information, but is too vague for anyone beyond an advanced amateur. Color photos of average quality are found throughout the book.

Outdated,
By The Everyday Critic (Neptune Beach, FL) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Complete Guide to Florida Gardening (Hardcover)
This book is way too general and most definitely outdated. Many plants one might consider for Florida are missing; for those interested in North Florida gardening, many plants are discouraged that have, in the last ten years, been bred to withstand a cooler climate. For example, he excludes gardenias for North Florida, but I've grown them quite successfully as far north as Charlotte, NC. Where is info on Sago Palms (I know they're Cycads), but they are popular in Florida - why no info? The "Annual" section reads like a northeast primer.
In the last 10 years Elephant Ears have exploded in variety, in this book, just a vague short paragraph addresses this exotic foliage. Definitely need something more up to date.

By mj (tampa, fl) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Stan DeFreitas' Complete guide to Florida gardening (Hardcover)
i have a fairly extensive florida gardening library. i borrowed this book & found it one of the best reference books i have ever used. after purchasing the revised edition, i found that though out-of-print, it is still far superior than anything else available.

Very nice guide to help plan, plant and maintain flowers or harvest home grown edibles from your own garden. In depth descriptions of soil preparation, plant selection as well as propagation techniques and when to plant your seedlings for the best results. Graphs, color photos and step by step instructions are big asset to help even the novice gardener understand how to get started and maintain a beautiful garden..

The book didn't really have any pertinent info for me, most of which I already knew and was for beginners. However I picked it up cheap at a used book store and I am satisfied enough with it to keep it with the rest of the gardening books.

Excellent resource for the 'green thumbs' of Florida,
By Green Thumb Brain (Florida) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Complete Guide to Florida Gardening (Hardcover)
I found this book to be an excellent resource for gardening in Florida. My job allows me to have significant free time, so I was able to read this book about 6 hours a day. What I gleened from it was invaluable information about how to get your lawn looking as green as possible, healthy and mature.
I very nice side benefit to having the best lawn on the block is being able to impress the ladies (and Sandip) with it. I cant count the number of times that I got a side benefit from my lawn. |
