a hunter and shooter,
By A Customer
This review is from: Complete Guide to Guns & Shooting (Paperback)
I have read this book, and I found it to be very basic, yet broad -- it doesn't assume you know anything about guns, and it builds from the basics it teaches. It also covers many topics, including many aspects of handguns, rifles, and shotguns. It is easy to read and has plenty of pictures and diagrams. I particularly liked the discussion of various cartridge styles and sizes: I learned many things about different bullets that I never knew before. Overall, this is an excellent book for a novice or less-experienced gun enthusiast. I'm going to buy a copy for a friend who just got interested in hunting and shooting this year.

An excellent, concise guide to guns and shooting,
By A Customer
This review is from: Complete Guide to Guns & Shooting (Paperback)
Malloy's book is the best single source of information for those who are beginners or intermediate-level shooters and for those who seek a broad, yet knowledgeable treatment of shooting and guns. The book covers, rifles, handguns, shotguns, blackpowder guns, airguns, reloading, buying guns and care & cleaning of guns. In each section, the author writes about different mechanisms (actions), cartridge types, shooting techniques and types of shooting (competitions, plinking and etc.). While I am not a beginner, I am not an expert with years of experience with guns. I definitely learned a lot from this book. Malloy's writing style is casual, easy and concise. I strongly recommend this book as a general reference book for every shooter and gun enthusiast. I also recommend it highly for those who recently took up shooting or for those who are thinking about getting into another type of firearm (from shotgunning to handgunning, for example).

An excellent introductory book for gun novice,
By
This review is from: Complete Guide to Guns & Shooting (Paperback)
This is an excellent book for the beginner, and also fit for intermediate gunners. The book starts with basic types of firearms and the firearm safety. Then the auther spends four or five chapters for each of the major types of the firearms: rifles, handguns, and shotguns. Each follow the same clear and easy to understand patterns: introduction, ammunition, sights, shooting, and shooting activities. The last chapters dealt with blackpowder guns, airguns, gun care, and even some materials regarding reloading and collection. Anyone who read this book will not become the so-called "guru" overnight. However, he or she will possess a much broader understanding of firearms and shootings.

Write book if you are the write reader...,

This review is from: Complete Guide to Guns & Shooting (Paperback)
This is a very informative book for the novice to intermediate... It brings old information of a historic nature together with shooting information we can all learn something from... If you are looking for more critical shooting science this may not be your cup of tea.... But for the right reader it is a great addition to the gun library... Over all we enjoyed it...

Good review of fundamentals,

This review is from: Complete Guide to Guns & Shooting (Paperback)
A fairly complete guide and reference manual to handguns, rifles, shotguns, and air rifles/pistols as well as safety issues, sport shooting, ammunition and reloading procedures, and cleaning and maintenance. Some of the photos are older, but add a quaintness and personal touch to this very readable and clear volume. Lots of interesting firearm history as well as sidelights on current competitive target shooting sports. Even a section on loading antique blackpowder muzzle-loading rifles and single-shot pistols. Useful glossary, list of manufacturers and equipment, associations, and publications.

A good, comprehensive introduction for beginners.,
By A Customer
This review is from: Complete Guide to Guns & Shooting (Paperback)
This book covers all the basics of guns and shooting today. Not only the fundamentals about rifles, hand guns, and shotguns, it also provides good instructions for safety, shooting, and reloading. Although the information in this book is mostly introductory, it does provide a comprehensive coverage for beginners. And I believe even an experienced shooter would have found it very useful.I have looked around to find a good introductory book for guns. This is the best one I have ever seen.

Competitive Shooter and Coach,
By
This review is from: Complete Guide to Guns & Shooting (Paperback)
I have had the pleasure to work with Mr. Malloy at several Junior Olympic camps in Florida. His insatiable desire to learn everything about shooting is cheerfully expressed in his work. His book covers critical aspects of shooting that would help every experience level. The book is concise and easy to read with photos and illustrations to help the reader. His friendly style is a bright contrast to the typical egotism developed by shooting authors. The book is highly recommended by a former Junior Olympic shotgun coach.

boring boring boring,

Extremely boring. I bought this after having purchased my first rifle hoping to understand many of the complexities of firearms, instead this book is an encyclopedia of minutia filled with useles historical data on out of date guns and ammo. Perhaps this is useful for the collectors out there but if you want current info try something else.
