DO NOT BUY THE KINDLE VERSION!!!!!,

Do not buy the Kindle version of this book! There is a problem with the text in the Kindle version that makes it impossible to determine the correct processing times for canning the various recipes (which could result in spoiled food and even death). Also, the recipes for the various canning syrups are impossible to figure out. I think these were likely in-text charts in the hardcopy version, but these were not transfered properly into the Kindle version. I intend to report this problem to Amazon, and hopefully they can correct the problem, or at least refund my money! Other than that, this book offers sound advice on proper canning techniques and some recipes that sound tasty. Stick with the hardcopy and I think you'll have a great canning guide along with numerous recipes to try out.

Miserable Kindle formating,

How do I get my money back? On a Kindle,I can't read the figures nor tables. It doesn't have a working index. Bullet lists are all messed up. But, text is enlightening and informative. Too bad somebody can't straighten up the CRAZY Kindle formatting. I would buy the paperback but reviews say that it's messed up too. The Kindle blanks the tables in Section 3 if you just move the PDF over to the Kindle. Only works on a Windows laptop with PDF version.

The info in the book may or may not be of value. Who can tell? The formatting in the Kindle edition looks as if some poor overworked underpaid secretary with no Kindle formatting experience or knowledge was forced to throw this into a file for publication as quickly as possible. Your tax dollars at work.
It can only be understood in full screen mode on a laptop. And there are a multitude of breaks where there should be no breaks and no break when a new page should start. Paragraphing was innacurate and all in all, the kindle edition, while inexpensive, is not really useable. I give it two stars for the technical info, and NO stars for the fact that you can't READ the technical info.

I am new to canning and preserving. I found this information online but wanted the book so I could keep it handing when I'm in the kitchen working and not have to print a bunch of stuff out from the computer. There is a ton of good information in this book but I do find it easier to find what I'm looking for on the website. However, I would recommend this guide to anyone looking for a comprehensive guide to canning, pickling, freezing, as well as making jams/jellies.

Basic canning information that could be found on the Internet,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Complete Guide to Home Canning and Preserving (Hardcover)
Most of the information given in the book is very basic which would be helpful to first timer canners. Most, if not all, of the information is public domain and is available online through the USDA. The one thing this book does offer is a concise compendium of canning information in print. This is very useful if you get stuck while trying to finish a canning project and you need information fast and don't have time to search online for it. You can quickly thumb through the well laid out sections to find the information you need. This is good for people who need to read and "digest" the canning information in print form. I am one of those which is why I buy cookbooks to help read and process cooking information.
For a variety of recipes, ones that are perhaps less basic, try the Ball Blue Book of canning. The Ball book gives current canning information and a variety of recipes that have been researched and documented to meet current canning standards.

Worthless Due to Typos,
By Barb (Columbus, OH, USA) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Complete Guide to Home Canning and Preserving (2009 Revision) (Paperback)
In the version sent to me, the tables containing processing temps & times were completely unreadable due to computer glitch "typos". The free version I found on-line had perfect tables, so I downloaded & printed those for free.
I wanted a bound book, but this one was worthless! Perhaps a different publishing "run" in the future will be printed without the table glitches, but the book sent to me was a complete waste of money.

I am a first time canner and had not a clue as to what I was doing. This book made the whole process a breeze. I started with a small garden this year but plan on expanding vastly next year. A very easy to follow book. I would highly recommend it for 1st time canners such as myself and for seasoned canners. I have a couple friends who have been canning for years that have borrowed it for ideas.

I bought this book because I use the on-line information from USDA all the time and thought the book would save me time. My biggest complaint with the book is the lack of index for quickly finding the recipe I am looking for. Once I get used to the book I will probably like it much better. I am currently very busy canning so do not have time to learn a new method of finding recipes.
