Absolutely perfect introduction to Homeopathy!,
By M. Chishty, Ph.D. (applemac97@aol.com) (Chicago, IL, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Complete Guide to Homeopathy: The Principles and Practice of Treament (Hardcover)
This is the best book on Homeopathy I have ever seen (and I have seen quite a few!). The design, layout, photos, graphics, charts, and text are amazingly well done, and perfect for anyone just getting started in Homeopathy. Everything important is cross referenced, and anyone can use the book to self-prescribe homeopathic remedies for minor illnesses. The book is a joy to read, and I have read some of the sections many times already!

I've been studying books about homeopathy for some 25 yrs now. This book is by far the most complete, the best illustrated and most usable book on what homeopathy is, how it works, how to treat yourself and family easily and very effectively. We give this book 2 THUMBS UP. Beautifully executed....

I use this book quiet a bit, aside from being absolutly beautifully done, with great charts and easy to reference orginization, it also has a very good test in it to determine your constitutional tyype. This is an often overlooked part of homeopathy but a very important part. Constitutionl typing gives you a better starting point for treating the whole person, raising your energy and helping you become more true to yourself. I highly recommend this book for anyone taking homeopathy on thier own. Thanks :-)

Excellent book with good presentation without getting excessively technical. Easy and interesting to read and apply; allows one to understand the symptoms also much better, and can help in self treatment and also for explaining to the doctor your symtoms much better. A MUST READ AND OWN.

I am a physician who has very recently developed an interest in homeopathy, after my 15-year long migraine responded dramatically to homeopathic treatment. I have been looking for a book that will help me understand this wonderful and exceedingly intricate art and science. Dr. Lockie's book is by far the best for someone who is not a homeopathic practitioner, but does want accurate and detailed information on the subject. This book has helped me understand homeopathic philosophy. I have been able to accurately identify constitutional remedies for friends and family using this book. I have also made good use of the section on common complaints and remedies for acute prescribing. The layout, color photographs and pictures are breathtakingly beautiful. I have bought multiple copies for friends and family. This book will prove to be a welcome addition to anyone's library - be they practitioners, beginners or novices to the art!

Beautiful presentation, but simplistic and not enough depth,
By A Customer
This review is from: Complete Guide to Homeopathy: The Principles and Practice of Treatment (Hardcover)
Homeopathy is a very deep, complex subject. Evaluating a person for a homeopathic remedy is a painstaking and time-consuming process that cannot be shortcut if the subject concerned wants a remedy that will get to the root of the problem. Lockie's presentation in this book is graphically beautiful. I However, was put off because answers and explanations were so pat and simplistic. Also, there was no reason given behind some of the recommendations of substances to stay away from. I particularly did not like the pictures of the remedy type persons -- beause I doubt it is so simple, and because during the course of treatment, a person can present symptoms that are addressed by a specific treatment, but these symptoms can then change and require a different treatment. After years of homeopathic treatment of our entire family and dealing with very complex medical issues, I don't think that Lockie should encourage the layperson to try to cure him or herself. This can only lead to disaster and muddying the waters with regards to symptoms that will arise as a result of the various treatments that someone untrained in homeopathy is likely to try.

This review is from: The Complete Guide to Homeopathy: The Principles and Practice of Treament (Hardcover)
At first sight homeopathy appears to be absurd: it talks about a vital force; of like curing like and super-dilute remedies containing not one molecule of the original substance. All of these are enough to strain anyone's credulity. The trouble is that there is a small amount of empirical research indicating that it may actually work, as well as two centuries of clinical experience indicating that it is a good deal more than a placebo.
This is a very nice book: beautifully produced and with a surprising amount of detail. Many of the better known remedies are discussed and there are helpful photographs illustrating the physical appearance most often associated with particular medicines. This is clearly intended to be an introduction to what can be a vast field of study. There are literally thousands of books on homeopathy and it takes years to master the topic. But it is possible to learn the basics from this book and to begin to use a few of the more common remedies. The other point is that the book will give you a very good idea of the kinds of questions asked by a homeopath. That in itself is valuable: people are often perturbed to be asked about the precise time of day when their symptoms occur, their favorite colors and whether they like or dislike certain foods. If you have any interest in holistic heath care in general and homeopathy in particular this terrific place to start. The book is handsome, and though not comprehensive, it gives you enough to see if this therapy seems right for you. Highly recommended.

Enlightening and accessible,

Until this book homeopathy for me had always been a discipline that was very hard to understand and seemingly full of inconsistencies and indecipherable jargon. In this highly accessible volume, the authors demystify the concepts and make them very easy to understand, and also provide very useful information about the history of homeopathy and its applications to various conditions. Very attractive volume from a physical layout point of view as well. If like me you were interested in becoming more familiar with this subject, this seems like as good a place as any to start.

Well layed out like all DK books. Content seemed a bit lacking to me. There is a newer second edition out now which may be better. The Encylopedia (by the same author and DK) seems to be a better book to me. Homeopathy does seem a little like witch craft (check out the "hair of the cat" cure!) -- althoughI know 2 people who have had asthma cured by it. Seems like it works but they just cannot come up with a decent explanation of why.

This book is very useful. It provides a good view of the basic principles of homeopathy, homeopathic typologies and applications of homeopathy.
It helps you understand why your physician prescribes a treatment. Pleasant and interesting to read. The quality of printing and the pictures make the reading even more agreeable. |
