Excerpt from Foreword:"The Liberty Seated Half Dime series ran from 1837 to 1873. Since then, no silver nickels have been minted, aside from the 35% silver Jefferson Nickels during World War II. A complete date run of the series, including the 1859 and 1860 fantasy pieces, and the famous and extremely rare 1870-S, totals 83 coins. However, depending on the varieties and one wishes to collect, this number can significantly increase. Assembling a complete set, with the exception of the 1870-S and, perhaps the 1859 fantasy piece, can be a major challenge, especially in high grades. Yet, it is an attainable goal, over time, through diligent and patient searching." |
