From Library Journal
These two volumes will assist writers and aspiring writers in their publishing quests this year. Published under the auspices of the Council of Literary Magazines and Presses, the Directory of Literary Magazines has been issued annually for well over a decade and has become a standard tool for writers and librarians, supplementing entries in Ulrich's and Writer's Market. As with previous editions, the 1999 version provides a range of information on over 600 literary magazines, with a sprinkling of international titles. Arranged alphabetically by title, the directory includes a brief description of each magazine, genres published, names of editors, contact information, recent contributors, subscription rates, distributors, advertising information, and even ISSN numbers and copyright information. The volume concludes with a helpful listing of magazines by geographic area. A new offering compiled by Literary Fountain, The Complete Guide to Literary Contests 1999 is intended to be an annual publication. Listing over 450 major and minor U.S. literary contests, it covers fiction, poetry, drama, and nonfiction. Arranged by sponsoring agency, with the table of contents serving as a basic directory, the guide provides detailed information on rules and guidelines, prizes, formats, eligibility, judging, and other pertinent details. It also includes entry forms for many contests and has appendixes covering copyright information, questions for agents, and a list of arts councils in the United States and Canada. The entries are generally more detailed than those in Literary Market Place or Writer's Market. Writers and librarians finding that they need more information about literary magazines and contests than appears in Ulrich's, Literary Market Place, or Writer's Market can now turn to these two very useful reference sources.AKathy Breeden, Univ. of Tennessee at Chattanooga
