Book Description

Complete Guide to Literary Contests December 2000
Winning a literary contest can open doors that might otherwise remain closed to many aspiring writers. A career of literary achievement has often begun after a writer has won an award for fiction, nonfiction, poetry, or drama. This vital reference guide, compiled annually by national contest experts at Literary Fountain, is the most comprehensive volume available, offering valuable information on nonfiction, fiction, poetry, and play contests in the United States for published and unpublished authors.Compared with previous editions, this 2001 edition contains almost 100 more contests, including 20 Canadian contests, and appendices listing web addresses for 'e-contests', writers' resources, and information on the leading trade magazines. From such major contests as the Pulitzer Prize and the Pen/Faulkner Award to smaller scale competitions such as the Pro Dogs National Charity and the Key West Theater Festival, this user-friendly guide contains nearly every open contest in the American market. Information is included on criteria governing submission of written work, entry guidelines and rules, entry forms and applications as well as deadlines for submission, judging procedures, the names of previous winners, available fellowships and grants, copyright issues, addresses, valuable contacts, and a guide to finding literary agents. In today's literary market, this guide could be the competitive edge you need to achieve your dream!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Treasure Book for Gold Hunters, January 23, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: The Complete Guide to Literary Contests 2001 (Paperback)
This book is full to the brim---a Leprechaun's pot of gold, if you can just catch the Leprechaun! If you like writing contests you will find many here that will appeal to you, and the sooner you get started the better you will do! It is, of course, a given, that often entering writing contests puts one at a disadvantage in some cases, where the prizes are large and professionals are more apt to throw in their shining entries; however, here we have so many with such a variety of prizes that anyone with any ability whatsoever should be able to win in one or more of the contests. The variety of possibilities is an aid, as well; from the short poem or brief essay to the novel, a niche may be found for one's work. The descriptions of the entry requirements are clear and easily understandable, and the closing dates well marked. The helpful hints included are a boon to veteran contesters as well as newbies, and I would suggest a thorough study of these before putting quill to parchment, as it were. I heartily recommend this illustrious collection of contests for all, and it is a welcome entrant into the lists of contests, of which there are all too few at this point in time. Let us hope it becomes an annual directory.

4.0 out of 5 stars A dream in a literary contest, April 30, 2010

This review is from: The Complete Guide to Literary Contests 2001 (Paperback)
If you need to know about American literary contests this is the most complete guide you can find. Sometimes a literary contest is just a dream for you, so don't know what is the best for your book to get in. However, any kind of book you wrote, can be sure that will find the right contest for your need. But there is much more in those pages. If you are looking for some particular association or American cultural magazines or foundation, you will find them. To me this Guide has been a nice surprise and I hope it will be the same for you.
