Drawing on the latest thinking in psychiatry and psychology, and written for women of diverse backgrounds, this trade reference guide to women's mental health provides a comprehensive and readable overview to the psychological
issues that concern women most. Arguing that women want and need to understand their mental health as more than a question of disorder or normality, it begins with the life cycle, helping women understand the major issues and biological changes associated with young adulthood, middle age, and old age. The Complete Guide to Mental Health for Women also
specifically addresses the psychological importance of women's sexuality and relationships, and discusses how social contexts, such as poverty and racism, affect mental health.

Part Two explores specific mental disorders, including those, like postpartum depression, related to times when women are particularly vulnerable to mental illness. Part Three takes a closer look at treatments, including the use of antidepressants and other drugs, and various types of psychotherapy,
from cognitive behavioral treatments to EMDR and beyond. The Complete Guide to Mental Health for Women ends with a section on life enhancements that discusses some of the activities that can help us live fuller lives.

Review

"At over 300 pages, The Complete Guide to Mental Health for Women definitely isn't light reading. But don't dismiss it as dry stuff--we found it truly engaging, with useful info from more than 50 experts. . . .More than just a discussion of the three M's--marriage, motherhood, and menopause--the book has thoughtful chapters on choosing childlessness, facing issues in midlife, and coping with bereavement. True, The Complete Guide to Mental Health for Women might not end up alongside your favorite steamy novels, but it's worth a spot on your bookshelf."- Health Magazine, September 2003

This handbook offers a woman significant,up-to-date information regarding mental health and strategies of care. I was totally shocked, however, by the lack of mention of psychiatric nurses as mental health care providers!

Advanced Practice Psychiatric Nurses posess minimally a masters'degree in psychiatric nursing and are board certified by their professional association. Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRN, BC) practice both independently and in various health care settings, providing holistic care for individuals, couples and families in various treatment modalities. They are reimbursable by many health insurance companies. They provide psychotherapy and psychopharmacology for the treatment of mood and anxiety disorders.

I feel that this group of mental health care providers provide quality care and are a major asset to the mental health team.
I hope that in the second edition of this book that this issue will be corrected and this valuable group of mental health care providers will be included as a resource for women suffering with mood and anxiety disorders.
