5.0 out of 5 stars Book and DVD for under $15 bucks? Great Deal!, June 21, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: The Complete Guide to Navy SEAL Fitness: Featuring the 12 Weeks to BUD/S Workout (Includes Bonus DVD) (Paperback)
Wow! I can't believe what a value this is. The video is awesome and the book is the real deal. Stew Smith is the guru of military -- SEAL --- fitness and this is exactly what I needed to get started on my quest to be in top shape. The book contains detailed workout plans and exercise instruction tips etc.

The bonus video (DVD) is very helpful for form, swimming (underwater shots are awesome!),etc. Woirth the price alone. Great job!

Wow! what a workout! I have been in the fitness industry for years and this one is bad to the bone. No shortage of challenge. Forget trying to get "big" muscles; you will scare your friends just by completing the program and be in better shape than 99.9% of all gym rats!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!, May 15, 2006
This review is from: The Complete Guide to Navy SEAL Fitness: Featuring the 12 Weeks to BUD/S Workout (Includes Bonus DVD) (Paperback)
I've had this book since the very first printing several years ago, and originally bought the VHS tape to go with it. Now, they include a DVD of all the exercises with it. People, it really doesn't get any better than that! Where can you get one of the most excellent resources on fitness as well as a DVD for under $15? If you DO the workouts included in the book, you will reach a level of fitness that you have never reached before. If you want to be in good shape, buy another book. If you want to be in GREAT shape, get this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good workout, June 30, 2006
This review is from: The Complete Guide to Navy SEAL Fitness: Featuring the 12 Weeks to BUD/S Workout (Includes Bonus DVD) (Paperback)
After running a marathon, I was a little bored with running so I decided to do something with more variety. I picked up this book and I'd have to say it was a really good experience. Not only was I in ridiculously good physical condition but people could tell I was (and you get great posture). My three minor criticisms are:
1) The author introduces a style of swimming in this book that was rather hard for me to figure out. I had to google around until I found a short movie of it and even then I was a little unsure of its application.
2) Like any workout of this magnitude, you're going to end up spending a lot of time by yourself... unless you find workout partners.
3) You'll get some muscle mass from the pushups, pullups, etc. But since here isn't a weight lifting component, you may not see much. This is also kind of an endurance program so that's another reason you shouldn't expect to look like the pictures of the author throughout the book (particularly if you have a lanky body type to begin with).

5.0 out of 5 stars Greate Routines for Different Levels, April 11, 2006
By
Nathan Carson (Ontario, Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Complete Guide to Navy SEAL Fitness: Featuring the 12 Weeks to BUD/S Workout (Includes Bonus DVD) (Paperback)
This book contains the core 12 Weeks to BUD/S routine and a 4 week beginners routine. Both routines are EXTREMELY demanding and you need to be in decent shape for either of them. They're definately not your average workout but will, without a doubt, put you into the best shape of your life irregardless of your current fitness level.

The best thing about this book is that it's hardcore and you don't need a gym. I travel often for work and am able to complete my workouts while on the road without a problem.

Stew Smith definately knows how to whip people into shape and this is a prime example of him showing how it's done. Definately one of the best fitness buys I've ever made.

5.0 out of 5 stars Physically demanding program, April 3, 2006
This review is from: The Complete Guide to Navy SEAL Fitness: Featuring the 12 Weeks to BUD/S Workout (Includes Bonus DVD) (Paperback)
I have had this book for a year now and I've completed the 12 weeker once in that time. It was very tough and takes a lot of time to keep with the program. But the results are there if you can complete the entire workout. I am going to do the 12 weeks again this summer and I will be more prepared for it now. It is also nice to have around and snag a workout from on a day that you want to mix your exercises up. The book also contains a great 4 week beginner section if you are just a little bit out of shape. Be warned though, this book is meant for people already in good shape.

5.0 out of 5 stars Oh my!, December 25, 2006

To say this is an intense workout is a gross understatement. This book is packed with information to help you through the workouts. Like others have already said, this program is not for the fait at heart. It requires a tremendous amount of intestinal fortitude to get through, but once you do you will reap your rewards.

Thanks again Stew!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide to military fitness and general physical fitness, July 10, 2006
This review is from: The Complete Guide to Navy SEAL Fitness: Featuring the 12 Weeks to BUD/S Workout (Includes Bonus DVD) (Paperback)
Buy this book.

It offers two workout programs - a 4-week introductory workout program to the 12-week BUD/s preparation workout. Like other reviewers point out, this book is meant for people that are already in good shape because it is meant to prepare prospective BUD/s students. Both the 4-week and 12-week exercise programs are fantastic. They require dedication as well as intestinal fortitude in order to reap the benefits. Make no mistake - it is difficult.

The companion DVD is also good. Stew Smith visually demonstrates every stretch and exercise that is in the book. It's nice to have, but don't worry if you find a used copy of the book without the DVD.

You will need to have access to a swimming pool in order to complete the workouts. A large part of the swimming program requies fins. If you want to be a SEAL, follow through with this and purchase fins. If you simply want to be in incredible shape, just skip the fins and complete the swimming.

There is no weight training in this book. After careful analysis of the entire exercise program, I can see why - if you can complete the 4-week and 12-week programs, you will be stronger than ever.

This is the best exercise book I have ever bought.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quality in every way., April 1, 2006
This review is from: The Complete Guide to Navy SEAL Fitness: Featuring the 12 Weeks to BUD/S Workout (Includes Bonus DVD) (Paperback)
Even if you have no desire to join the special forces you can gain so much from this book. Amidst all the fitness information available nowadays this book is right at the top and its power is that it does not offer quick fix diets, gimmicks, new machines and so on. It is written from the heart and you know that the author practices what he preaches. Modify the routines for your lifestyle or incorporate them totally into your life;either way they work and the feeling of accomplishment you get when you do some of the workouts is immense!
