5.0 out of 5 stars Buy it!, May 10, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I used this book only to prepare for the test, and it was more than enough. All major areas are covered extremely good.

1. Media and Topologies - 5 stars

2. OSI model - 5 stars (you're going to understand the forbidding OSI model once you read it - about 150 pages)

3. TCP/IP - the protocol stack is explained very well

(for subnetting and supernetting you're going to need some outside help - google it up)

4. IPX/SPX - 5 stars

5. WAN and remote access - 5 stars (T lines, SONET, ....)

6. Fault tolerance and backup recovery - 5 stars (RAID levels, hot sites, hot spares .... everything is there)

7. Network troubleshooting - 5 stars (that chapter alone is worth buying the book)

8. Security protocols 4 stars - does get a little bit confusing over here.

Graves did slack on a few areas, such as:

1. VLAN - it wasn't in the book, but I got it on my exam. Luckily, I remembered reading about it a few months back.

2. TCP/IP utilities are not examplified - you'll have to fire them up a few times so you know what they do - learn switches (e.g. ping -t) it hit me three times on my exam

3. OS should've used a few more pages

4. Mac OS and ApleTalk protocols are almost completely left out

Anyway, if you want to learn this material and pass the test - this is the book. Look no further.

I got the book on time and it was on great condition. In the future, I would definitely advise my colleagues and my relatives to buy books from this seller.

4.0 out of 5 stars see the Internet descriptions, August 5, 2005
Graves furnishes a comprehensive and technically sophisticated guide to the various common networks deployed in the field. The expected audience for this book is a reader from electrical engineering or computer science.

Unsurprisingly, the Internet gets a lot of attention. Graves goes through the OSI model, explaining in detail what each layer does. There is usually a chapter on each, to give you an idea of the amount of detail involved.

Given the Internet Protocol, various higher level protocols are explained. The alphabet soup that includes ARP, RARP, DHCP, FTP and HTTP. Where the latter is the crucial one that gives us the Web.

Not that the book is exclusively about the Internet. ATM, frame relay and other topics are covered. Though one might wonder as to the future of some of these, given the still strong growth of the Internet.
