Best Overall Overview,

If you're a pre-op wondering what sort of weight loss surgery you want and how to get it, or a recent post-op wondering "now what?", this is a good basic handbook. It covers a lot of territory, from considering the processes to living with the results. On the other hand, it is badly enough written that I found the written style distracting. If you're only going to buy one book, this is probably the best choice. On the other hand, Barbara Thompson's "Weight Loss Surgery: Finding the Thin Person Hiding Inside You" covers most of the same ground, but concentrates on RNY, and puts more emphasis on the personal experience of the patient. It is also considerably better written. If RNY may be in your future, I'd suggest that you force yourself to read this one, then read Ms. Thompson's as a reward.

The best one,

I've been doing extensive research on this surgery and have read most of the books out there. This is by far the best one, not only because of the information, but because of the excellent format. It is easy to find exactly what you're looking for. It contains diagrams and charts. It gives the reader a comprehensive look at the process and doubles as a handbook for patients as they have their surgeries and cope with post surgical issues. In other books, the reader has to wade through a lot of narrative or personal experience material; this one gives you the straight stuff. I highly recommend it.

The book provides solid information on various WLS procedures and lists of questions to ask your surgeon as you go through the process. Highly recommended for anyone considering WLS.
