Comprehensive, Comprehensible, Indispensable,
By A Customer
This review is from: Comp gde pres/no 2000 (Complete Guide to Prescription and Nonprescription Drugs, 2000) (Paperback)
Comprehensive, comprehensible, and updated annually, this Guide is indispensable for anyone who takes prescription medications. The Guide includes generic as well as brand name drugs, provides basic information on its uses, whether it is habit forming, how it should be taken, what to do if you forget a dose, possible side effects, their frequency and what to do about them, precautions for special circumstances, and possible interaction with other drugs or substances.I bought the first one years ago for my parents because my mother seemed to be always taking one drug to counteract her previous prescription, and Dad had a lot of allergic reactions. Doctors can't remember every possible side effect of all the drugs they prescribe, so this book helped identify problems caused by medications rather than other reasons. I get my Dad the new version every year, and he passes his old one down to my family. When we are prescribed a new medication not in last year's version, we go to Dad's new edition. At times over the years I've been late in getting Dad his updated edition, and he has purchased several other prescription drug guides. None was nearly as easy to use, and not one provided as much useful information, as Griffith's Guide.

QUALITY AT THE RIGHT PRICE,

This review is from: Complete Guide to Prescription & Nonprescription Drugs, 2002 (Paperback)
The "Complete Guide to Prescription & Non-prescription Drugs" may not be a perfect drug guide, but considering its extensive coverage ... it is a clear winner. With information on more than 5,000 brand names and more than 700 generic names, it deserves a second look. This book contains simplified pharmaceutical and pharmacological information that is designed for non-medics. It is quality at the right price! Be it weight by weight or volume by volume, this book is superior to "The American Pharmaceutical Association's Guide to Prescription Drugs". It's worth every dime you spend on it.

Great reference, but I wish prescription drugs were listed by their trade names.
You have to go to the index, look up a trade name, then cross reference with the generic name on the a to z listing.

This review is from: Complete Guide to Prescription and Nonprescription Drugs 2005 (Complete Guide to Prescription & Non-Prescription Drugs) (Paperback)
It's a great reference for people that are on prescription drugs and need to obtain some background information about them. Also great for most people, because we all take over-the-counter drugs from time to time, mostly for cold, fever, allergies, and pain relieves. Personally I think the most useful sections in the book are the ones on possible adverse reactions and possible interactions with other substances(for example certain foods). Like one of the other reviewers said, this book lacks the recommended dosage. It tells you what form the drug should be taken, and in what interval, but doesn't tell you how many milligrams you need. I think I understand why they didn't include that specific info. A good doctor must be aware that everyone has different tolerance levels and sensitivity to various drugs and foods. Therefore, most normal dosage for average folks might be too much for some, and vice versa. This book is intended as a general information guide, not a replacement for going to the doctor or pharmacist. Overall, good price and nice to have around the house, unless you're Superman and can only get sick from Kryptonite, lol.

Useful reference to prescription and OTC drugs,
By fairview (Michigan) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Complete Guide to Prescription and Nonprescription Drugs 2005 (Complete Guide to Prescription & Non-Prescription Drugs) (Paperback)
This is a useful and helpful reference to commonly used prescription and Over-The-Counter drugs. It is fairly compact, not too big or heavy. Print size is very readable and layout of the pages is good. It comes out every year with a new edition. Having up-to-date information is important.
The negatives are that it does not contain information on recommended dosages. Dosages for each person can vary due to weight or build or needs as deterimed by your doctor. But it is useful to know what the average dosage is for a medication. If your dosage is larger or smaller than average it would be something that might be discussed with your doctor. Medications are listed by generic name. A person needs to look up the brand name in the index to find the generic name. This is a good guide and a useful addition to your home reference library. It is a little incomplete because of the absence of recommended dosages. But I like the inclusion of OTC medications. |
