If you write screenplays, you NEED THIS REFERENCE!!!, September 22, 2009
This review is from: The Complete Guide to Standard Script Formats: Part II, Taped Formats for Television (Pt.2) (Paperback)
While you are STILL required to actually THINK, this reference will help you with the proper formatting.
This book is part of a two book set. This one covers the proper formats for nearly all television broadcasts. The Companion book covers the proper formats for film.
While with time there will be slight changes in the overall standards, if you write your script in an acceptable format, (whether or not it's in the very newest industry standard), it stands a much better chance of being produced. (The formatting can always be updated, after the fact. But, if it has to be rewritten because it wasn't in an acceptable format to begin with, no matter how old it is, most if not all productions will quickly pass on buying your script.)
This book covers nearly all aspects of the formatting, including covers, fonts, spacing and kerning of all the text, terminology, screen direction and camera angles, as well as providing complete example scripts to compare with. What little this book does not cover is for the most part things that are specific to individual productions. So, to include that information would be somewhat self-defeating. This book is designed to provide at least the minimum standards accepted by ANY production, not just one or two exceptions. If you meet at least those standards, you're good to go.
Although Amazon currently lists it as "out of publication", that does not mean it is no longer available. It simply means it may be being published as a new revised and updated edition, with a different listing and ISBN number. OR, this particular version of this book is currently not available DIRECTLY from Amazon. Don't fret though. There appear to be other resellers of this book, making copies of it available, by-proxy, through Amazon constantly. So, if you don't see it right now, check back later, and you might get lucky and see one of these other sellers posting it here for sale.
Definately get this book, (and it's companion). It is a worthwhile investment in your craft you won't regret.
