5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Study Course
John Person provides an excellent overview of necessary trading tools. I learned a great deal from his book and his seminars. The best part about his book is that he is a trader by profession and the information he provides he utilizes. This book is a must have for traders interested in increasing their consistency and profits from trading

I agree with a couple of posts that say this is a very basic book, and that most of the information could be found for free on the internet. I would go as far as to say that some information would be better if read on the internet.

The examples about pivots (the key part of the book), one chart after another were not easy to follow. The section on TA was woefully lacking. The author has a section on Gann theory, and more or less advises to go buy the book that Gann wrote. As it turns out, there is some pretty rich information about Gann on the web.

My biggest pet peeve about this book were the continual subliminal references (advertisements) to the author's subscription based website. Besides that, I did not like the blatent plugging of the people who praised his book on the back cover. It's okay for an author to put their website on the back of the book. If the information stands on it's own then I can go to the website to learn more. What's not cool is to give vauge trading strategies, then give some glowing account of how your subscription newsletter called the shots.

I did give the book two stars, which means I wasn't totally disapointed. He does stress a couple of good points regarding pivots, but it's all pretty basic beginner stuff.

2.0 out of 5 stars For the beginner, September 13, 2004
This review is from: A Complete Guide to Technical Trading Tactics: How to Profit Using Pivot Points, Candlesticks & Other Indicators (Wiley Trading) (Hardcover)
This book is for the beginner and offers no information that cannot be found (for free) on other internet sites. It appears as if the author has written this book to make his methodology clearer to himself and in the process decided to sell it as a book. No earth shattering revelations to be found and definately not enough good quality examples.

A bit disappointed in the content but this book will be a good read for an absolute newbie in the field.

4.0 out of 5 stars easy to understand, February 8, 2005

This review is from: A Complete Guide to Technical Trading Tactics: How to Profit Using Pivot Points, Candlesticks & Other Indicators (Wiley Trading) (Hardcover)

For anyone interested in a clearly written and easily understood book which explains how to profitably trade Stock Index and Futures products, this should fit the bill.
John Person writes as he speaks, in a conversational manner that gives the reader the feeling that he's learning from someone who has been in the business for over 25 years, and who wants to help others as he was helped during his career.
John, as I came to find out, is a much sought-after lecturer, and he goes into the various trading techniques including the use of Pivot Points, Candlesticks,
Cycle Analysis, and other indicators, as well as the mental aspects of Trading, which was very important to me.
The book has made a big impact on me and my personal trading, because of the clarity of the author's words and explanations. I would definately recommned this to anyone who is looking for a book that is easy to understand and is chock full of useful tips and examples.

This review is from: A Complete Guide to Technical Trading Tactics: How to Profit Using Pivot Points, Candlesticks & Other Indicators (Wiley Trading) (Hardcover)
After hearing an introductory lecture by John Person, I bought his book. It put together futures trading for me using techniques which I can apply. I then subscribed to Person's newsletter and attended a one day course. Now I am making money and can anticipate market moves. Person's book and Technical Analysis from A to Z by Achelis are my reference books.John is a great teacher.

3.0 out of 5 stars Website Subscription marketing..., March 14, 2008

This review is from: A Complete Guide to Technical Trading Tactics: How to Profit Using Pivot Points, Candlesticks & Other Indicators (Wiley Trading) (Hardcover)
What I really wanted to comment on was the website that is frequently mentioned in this book. Navellier does the same thing, for example. These websites are useful as resources, as confirmation of one's own independent analysis and research. A variety of analytical techniques, combined with a rating from one of these websites for some more confirmation, is not a bad way to trade. However, I find subscribing to a lot of these services as not only expensive ($50 a month subscriptions add up quick) but not so useful to RELY ON. (notice I said rely on, rather than not useful to use... they are very useful for providing extra information.)

By the time you move into a suggested position the "real" clients of these trading strategies have already taken their positions and possibly run up the price, making the ideal bottom point of a run difficult to get in on.

It is really common for trading manuals to seem like marketing ploys for their websites. If the site is a FREE SERVICE and provides research and technical details, then use it. Books that get one revved up by saying how much money their clients are making, "Go to my website to see how we do it..." (fine print- thanks for buying my book, but now you have to subscribe to my website) Be wary. Very wary. Use this information as a RESOURCE, not a crutch. As I mentioned earlier, as confirmation of one's own analysis these sites can be excellent informational sources, and can provide easily accessible, time-saving analysis. The more information from a variety of sources you employ, the better off you are.

The best short term trading book you can get. If you trade the markets and don't know anything about pivot points, YOU MUST READ THIS BOOK!!! If you don't trade the markets but are thinking about it, YOU MUST READ THIS BOOK!!! Excellent information on technical analysis without being too technical:)

This book is a gem... great discussions on the lesser known areas of trading. Of course, this book does a great job of covering the standard indicators in a very well thought out fashion. But the real power J. Person's book lies on the chapters on crowd behavior, and going against the grain of the "talking heads."

I greatly enjoyed this read, and know I will be implementing many of the ideas in my own trading. Trading Tactics is a must read for all, novices as well as seasoned professionals will find something useful within its pages...SB

The technical tactics and techniques described in this book have already helped me to start making a profit in forex trading on a more consistent basis.

This book's explanation on how to place orders and the different types are the best I've read so far.

Pivot Points used in conjunction with Candlesticks is what I have been using to trade currencies and so far the results have been very satisfying. Thank you Mr Person for writing this most excellent book!

I started my career reading books from the likes of John J. Murphy, Steve Nison, McMillan, Elder, Bulkowski, etc...

This book can sit on my shelf in equal company from each of these other great analysts.

Thanks for your insight and guidance John, it is sincerely appreciated.

I especially enjoyed the section on Pivot Points.

Sincerely,
LT
