Editorial Reviews

From the Author

My Damnation Books/Eternal Press publisher, Kim Richards, was editing a book about writing paranormal fiction for another publisher and since most of my 16 novels and short stories are paranormal/horror/suspense/murder mysteries she asked me to write the INTRODUCTION for it. Which I did. The rest of the book is excellent, as well. A lot of respected and experienced writers contributed to it. It'll really help a new paranormal writer.

About the Author

I did the INTRODUCTION for this book...
About Kathryn Meyer Griffith...
Since childhood I've been an artist and worked as a corporate graphic designer and for newspapers for 23 years before I quit to write full time. I began writing novels at 21, forty years ago, and have sixteen (eleven romantic horror, one historical romance, one romantic suspense, one romantic time travel and two murder mysteries) previous novels and twelve short stories from Zebra Books, Leisure Books, Avalon Books, The Wild Rose Press, Damnation Books and Eternal Press.
I've been married to Russell for thirty-four years; have a son, James, and grandchildren, Joshua and Caitlyn, and live in a small quaint town in Illinois called Columbia, which is across the JB Bridge from St. Louis, Mo. We have three quirky cats, ghost cat Sasha and live cats Cleo and Sasha (Too), and the five of us live happily in an old house in the heart of town. Though I've been an artist, and a folk singer in my youth with my brother Jim, writing has always been my greatest passion, my butterfly stage, and I'll probably write stories until the day I die.

My books (damnationbooks.com/people.php?author=79)and Eternal Press. (eternalpress.biz/people.php?author=422): Evil Stalks the Night-Revised Author's Edition; The Heart of the Rose-Revised Author's Edition; Blood Forge-Revised Author's Edition; Vampire Blood-Revised Author's Edition; The Last Vampire -Revised Author's Edition; Witches-Revised Author's Edition; The Nameless One short story; The Calling-Revised Author's Edition; Scraps of Paper; All Things Slip Away; Egyptian Heart; Winter's Journey; The Ice Bridge; Don't Look Back, Agnes, novella; In This House short story; The Nameless One, erotic short story; Always & Forever, erotic contemporary novella; BEFORE THE END: A Time of Demons; The Woman in Crimson; The Guide to Writing Paranormal Fiction: Volume 1 (I did the Introduction);Dinosaur Lake; and four 99 cent each SPOOKY SHORT STORIES

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for paranormal and beyond! January 5, 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I received this as a Christmas gift, and promptly set to reading it and taking in the vaste amount of wonderful information contained within. I write a lot of paranormal, so I was anxious to discover what I was doing right and even more what I might be doing wrong. I'm very, very glad to have this book in my resource collection! Apart from explaining why certain things do work and others don't for readers, there is a section on submitting to various publishers that I think EVERY writer should read and memorize. There is a fabulous section on self-editing, as well, that points out the things that writers should do automatically, but which many don't know about or think about before they send in manuscripts.

I recognized many names in this book, and I'm happy to see a very detailed examination of this genre by people who do know it. I hope Volume Two will be published soon, I'll be first in line to get it! A very good book for anyone interested not just in paranormal, but in the process of fiction writing in general, and how to get it published once you've written the tale! Superb book!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A very complete Guide September 1, 2012

What stumps me is the thought that this is vol 1. At 406 pages, you wonder what they're going to do for an encore. This book is rich-rich-rich. It gives you the tips & guidelines on writing varying forms of the paranormal, in addition, the how-to of fiction writing as a whole, right down to editing and other advice e.g:Critique groups (various kinds - with pros & cons), getting inspiration from the archetypes (such as Frankenstein)and a plethora of paranormal recommended readings.

I almost picked "Writing the Paranormal Novel" by Steven Harper because of the glowing Amazon reviews (I might still pick it up later) but I'm glad I picked this one 1st. Besides, Harpers book is at my local library. This one wasn't. That said, this book is a recommended read for any aspiring/been there writer.

Offering my own 10 cents: Do not read this book until you've gone far in your 1st draft. I say this because I personally believe the world of the supernatural should come from and through the eyes of the writer as he sees it in his "minds eye." If you feel that you should conform to the stereotypes as created by others, please by all means, go for it. But I believe each person has his own "vision" of his/her supernatural world & its creatures, and it needs to be shared. After you've let loose that "Vampire with no fangs" or "Ghosts that can not pass through walls" then pick up this book to help flesh things out.

A definite recommend.

PS: The large word print is an added plus. Especially for near sighted folks like myself.

5.0 out of 5 stars Insightful & Illuminating September 5, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This was the key I was looking for! I needed that extra boost, those answers from beyond for what I found hard to put into words. This book is a wonderful resource of various perceptions that will inspire you to look at your ideas and problems with new eyes. This book answered my existing questions and answered ones I hadn't thought of yet! I can't imagine what might be in volume 2 but I'm anxious for its release!
