Excellent Way to Begin Classical Guitar!,
By
This review is from: Complete Guitar Player Classical Book Bk/Cd (Classical Guitar) (Paperback)
This is a very good way to pick up the classical guitar as a beginner or as an acoustic or electric guitarist who wants to be more rounded i.e. complete. I have the version that came with a floppy vinyl record that served as both a tuning aid and also had the first 12 pieces played by Russ Shipton himself.Thankfully, they now sell this with a cd instead. However, I had long dispensed with the need for the vinyl as you quickly learn how to tune after a while and the pieces are so easy to pick up, you'll find that the first 12 pieces no longer become a challenge very soon. What I really like about this book is that most of the pieces are very melodious and you don't feel like you're practicing as it's really fun to play along to these pieces which gradually increase in difficulty level as you go along. One thing I didn't like too much was the fact that the pieces are quite short and especially towards the end, I was hoping for longer pieces and with regards the famous "Romanza", it would have been nice to have the second part of the piece to complete it as well. Another thing which I think is good is that the manuscripts are all in standard musical notation which compels you to learn to read music and hence there are no tabs here. In this case, as the music here is rather simple, you don't suffer so much as if you just follow the lessons slowly from the beginning without moving on too quickly, you'll find that learning to read the simple notes here isn't that hard. At the end, the author writes that you are now able to move on to more difficult music and even suggests other books to look at. One of the books by Frederick Noad was one that I had borrowed from the library years earlier to try and learn classical guitar but the boring pieces quickly made me give up. I'm really glad I found this great book by Russ Shipton which gives you all the foundation you need to start and still keep up your enthusiasm and then the rest is up to you. Highly recommended and good luck!
