Book Description

January 15, 1994
"This book...should be required reading not only for beginners but for the advanced trainer as well." ?Jim Dearinger, AKC Vice President, Obedience

Tom Knott, a professional trainer with more than thirty years' experience and an all-class AKC Obedience judge, teaches owners and trainers how to use building blocks in training and prevent them from becoming stumbling blocks.

The Complete Handbook of Dog Training shows readers how to make dog training a most enjoyable experience for both handler and dog. Progressive training techniques focus on teaching the dog how to learn and helping the handler avoid unintentional training. Here the reader will find detailed instruction, abundantly illustrated for all levels from Kindergarten Puppy Training through Utility. Chapters focus on teaching the young puppy through simple exercises and training play, and teaching the novice dog by minimizing corrections and abundant praise. Sections on Open training offer unique solutions to common problems and Utility chapters show training aids for the most advanced exercises.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

From puppy training to adult utility training, this will be a dependable, comprehensive title to fall back on when what was said in class just wasn't completely clear. All commands, whether simple sit/stay or more complicated hand signals, are thoroughly described, move by move. What is expected and not expected of the dog at each level is explained, and the importance of keeping the dog's obedience hours a positive experience is stressed. Much discussion is devoted to praising the dog correctly as well as how to be aware of any handler errors or unintentional training. Corrections and solutions for such common problems as crooked sits and shyness are unusually good for a title covering all levels of training. Highly recommended for any public library. 5.0 out of 5 stars Covering all aspects of dog training, October 23, 2000
This review is from: The Complete Handbook of Dog Training (Hardcover)
Easy to read information. This book cover all aspects of dog training in a way anyone can understand. I beileve any person owning a dog should have a copy of this excellent work. From puppy to utility all is explained clearly. The book covers handlers errors and some situation that can arise during training. I think this situations could have been explained in more detail, other than that, this book is great! It even includes an appendix about jump construction. Really is a great book.

I knew Thomas Knott for 8 years. We worked in the same area in Curtis Bay MD. I can attest this man knows his dogs from top to bottom and I would trust anything he says to be gospel.
