I'm not a vegan, however, I am always looking to supplement my nutritional needs with a broad spectrum of proteins and that is just what Vega provides. But Vega goes much farther than just protein. It's also full of fiber, omega's, enzymes, probiotics, maca and Chlorella Growth Factor. It's true it doesn't taste like Hershey's chocolate and that's ok with me. My 2 favorite flavors are Chocolate and Berry. I'm not fond of the Vanilla Chai as it tastes a little like tea and I'm not a tea drinker. However, I know a tea drinker who LOVES the vanilla chai flavor. I've been using various Vega products for 3 years now and feel that it's a product which helps me stay on top of my game, (running, swimming, weight training). And I'm a 57 year old female who lost 80 pounds in the last 3 years! I suggest you pick up a single serving package at Whole Foods or other retailers of the different flavors and then return to Amazon to purchase the tub size. Oh, and you can throw away all your vitamin bottles as Vega Whole Food Health Optimizer contains 100% of most things you'd ever need.

I took the recommendation of another reviewer and bought the single portioned packet yesterday at Whole Foods. I've seen the ads for this product a lot lately in the Oxygen and Clean Eating magazines and I've been meaning to try it. I've also been doing some research to compare it to the Beach Body product called Shakeology. When I compared the ingredients of Vega and Shakeology, the vitamin content and claimed benefits were similar (not exactly the same products by any means though), so I thought the easiest thing would be to try a single portion of Vega first and if I totally hated it, I'd try Shakeology (which people claim tastes amazing).

I eat what some would consider a pretty clean diet, so my palate is accustomed to a more "natural" range of flavors (my day consists of eating things like steel cut oats, natural almond butter, egg whites, hemp protein, plain greek yogurt, fresh or steamed veggies - no sugar or salt, but instead organic honey and lots of seasonings). Many of the reviewers said that they loved the taste of Vega and so I thought I'd be no different.

I blended the single pack portion first with just water alone to see what it tasted like plain. I can't say I totally agree with the other reviewers who said they thought it tasted like mud, but it definitely wasn't on the delicious end of the spectrum. Because I haven't used sugar substitute in a really long time (I only use small amounts of honey here and there), I really disliked that lingering sugar substitute taste. After that first sip, I decided to add a little bit of plain greek yogurt and a tablespoon of almond butter to see if it would improve the taste but that sweetener taste right at the end wouldn't go away. I, too, had a hard time finishing it (as other reviewers posted previously).

Well, in a supplement for muscle building and weightloss, I don't really care that much about flavor. Since that would be my only gripe with this stuff, I can't really even knock off one star for that. I would say as far as getting around taste, if you had access to soy milk and/or some good fruit, it would probably make this stuff a LOT easier to drink.

Pros:
- High energy supplement that is easy to digest, with a good balance of fat, carbs, protein.
- Vegan and Gluten-Free, so pretty much anyone can take it
- Mixes and cleans up easily
- Mild taste, easy to cover up with other smoothie-type foods

Cons:
- If you're not used to fiber, watch out and ramp it up slowly. Also, if you've been eating a lot of junky food (fried stuff, fatty stuff, prepackaged junkfood with lots of preservatives, etc.) you might expect to get "cleaned out" the first two or three days.
- The taste will likely be hard to get by for those not accustomed to "health"-type foods and supplements. It definitely have a faint hint of the wheat-grass taste. Recommend mixing it with something if you have access to it.

if there's one healthy thing you eat a day, make it vega. it's much more than a protein powder, it provides almost everything you need for the day in 1 meal.
healthy things always have a not so friendly taste, but what do you expect when eating something healthy? i don't think it taste so bad, but if you eat mcdonalds you might not agree.
I find chocolate is always best to make things taste better.
I usually make a smoothie with frozen fruits and add in seaweed sometimes for an extra health kick.

I've been using the chocolate Health Optimizer powder for a couple of weeks now, and I disagree with the descriptions of the taste found in the negative reviews.

True, the very first time I tried it there was a distinctly "leafy" taste that was a bit weird. But after that it hasn't bothered me at all, and in fact the flavor keeps getting better and better to me. Perhaps it's because my body likes what it's getting. :)

I like to drink it for breakfast first thing in the morning or right after I do an intense workout. I put one scoop (instead of the 2 scoops that comprise a single serving) into a full glass of cold water and stir with a spoon. I'm able to down that within a minute or two with no problem. Adding a little almond milk and/or orange juice makes it taste even better, but I usually just use water. Sometimes it remains a bit clumpy since I'm just using a spoon, but I've started even liking the clumps because it's more concentrated flavor.

I've noticed that I've been needing less sleep since starting to drink this and waking up feeling much more awake than I used to. I also seem to be recovering from workouts more quickly.

In summary, the cost is a bit high, but I'm quite satisfied with the flavor and the results, and I think I'm actually saving money by not having to buy a comparable set of individual vegan dietary supplements.
