5.0 out of 5 stars A fine collection, full of gems, February 8, 2010

This review is from: Complete Hill Ua Recordings 1972-75 (Audio CD)
This is a fine collection of ZZ Hill's work on UA. It captures the period before he settled down home as a bluesman with Malaco. Some of the material, especially the country stuff, isn't exciting, but the quality of the recording and his magnificent vocals, plus the songs with Allen Toussaint and the Meters, make up for it. The remastering is excellent, and there's a fine essay by Bill Dahl included. Nearly all the cd's in the Capitol Blues Collection (of which this is one) are worth seeking out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Z.Z.'s Best Work., March 20, 2007

This review is from: Complete Hill Ua Recordings 1972-75 (Audio CD)
Long story short, Z.Z. Hill's adventures into music apart from conventional twelve bar blues paid off with these recordings. With arrangements and compositions by Lamont Dozier and Allen Toussaint and others, Hill hit the nail on the head. This is New Orleans,Detroit,Memphis style r & b soul at it's best and this collection is much more diverse than any of his later work. I think this cd set is out of print nevertheless, it will go down in history as Z.Z. Hill's best work.
