Great WLS Resource,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Complete Idiot's Guide to Eating Well After Weight LossSurgery (Mass Market Paperback)
I got my copy of The Complete Idiot's Guide to Eating well after WLS. It is a great resource for anyone who has had WLS or is contemplating WLS. It gives insight to all WLS options and the special nutritional guidelines that each procedure needs. It includes many great ideas and recipes for both WLS patients and those just wanting to eat healthier. This book included many support group websites and blogs. I would recommend this book to any new WLS patient or anyone considering WLS.

Excellent Combo of Nutrition and WLS Recipes,

As a registered dietitian specializing in weight management, I received a review copy of this book. I was impressed with the book's content and organization. Everyone will understand the nutritional importance of eating healthy after WLS after reading this book. People need tasty recipes and there's something for every palette: margarita pizza, oven roasted chicken, and seared halibut with fennel. They didn't forget the desserts either (my fave: fugdy brownies). They also include practical tips for understanding food labels and eating healthy at restaurants.

I was waiting for The Complete Idiot's Guide to Eating Well After WLS to be released with great anticipation. I have read Ms. Furtado's previous book and many articles she has written so I was anxious to read this book. This book exceeded my expectations. It is an excellent book. It is a superb resource for anyone considering weight loss surgery, support persons, pre-ops and post-ops alike. There is information for anyone at any stage of the weight loss surgery process. I am a post-op since 2001 and I find it invaluable personally and professionally. I conduct weight loss surgery trainings in my job and the information Ms. Furtado shares in her book is very complete.
I recommend this book highly.

Lots of Useful Information, BUT......,
This review is from: The Complete Idiot's Guide to Eating Well After Weight LossSurgery (Mass Market Paperback)
I'm writing this as the spouse of someone who just had WLS and as the person in the house who does most of the cooking. The book does have a wealth of useful information about what WLS is, who should get it, what to expect, and how to adjust your habits afterward. And the recipes--the half dozen or so that I have tried--are quite good (the carrot cake is delicious!).
My word of caution to the prospective buyer: do your own nutritional analysis based on the ingredients you use in the recipes, because the nutritional facts given for many of them are just plain wrong. For example, one dish shows more than 400 grams of protien in a single serving. I don't hit that number in a week! In addition, the cholesterol numbers are shown in grams, when it's usually measured in milligrams. For anyone tracking their nutrients, let alone the WLS population for whom tracking these numbers is vital, these are significant problems. There are also inconsistencies between the recipe yields and the serving sizes. For example, one dish claimed to yield 8 servings, and listed the serving size as a quarter cup. When I divided the finished product into eighths, the serving size was at least half a cup. So does the calorie count refer to the quarter cup? Or to the eighth of the recipe? Frustrating. So--in short--if you buy the book for the recipes, take the nutrient table with a grain of salt. I continue to use the many tasty recipes. But I use my on-line calorie calcualtor to analyze the nutritents in the dish myself. For a book that claims to be thoroughly researched and fact checked, these inconsistencies and errors are really surprising, and not in a good way.

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Eating Well After Weight Loss Surgery,
This review is from: The Complete Idiot's Guide to Eating Well After Weight LossSurgery (Mass Market Paperback)
I am just over one year since my Gastric Bypass surgery and had anxiously awaited the release of Margaret Furtado's "Idiot" book. I was, by no means, disappointed. I found her book to be extremely helpful to me; however, I also feel that any person who is anticpating weight loss surgery would also benefit greatly from this book. The book is jam-packed with information and helpful hints on post-surgery eating, pitfalls, proteins, fluid intake, food labels, avoiding future weight gain and recipes. I feel what sets this book apart from others that I have read is the multitude of wonderful nutrition information! Much of the nutrition information applies not only Weight Loss Surgery patients, but to anyone who is concerned with nutrition and good health! It's written in an easy-to-read format. This book is not simply "another recipe book". I consider the recipes to be an "added bonus" in this informational, reference book.

Great Nutritional Information - So-so Recipes,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Complete Idiot's Guide to Eating Well After Weight LossSurgery (Mass Market Paperback)
While the nutritional information in this book is stellar, the recipes leave something to greatly be desired for all weight loss surgery patients: protein. Some of the recipes actually have as little as 2 grams of protein, which is simply not acceptable for a person who now has a tiny pouch to put food into, and gives the appearance of being "weight loss surgery friendly recipes" when in fact, with only 2g of protein, they are anything but. The recipes that are protein based are exceptional however, and one of my favorites being the Honey-Soy-Glazed Salmon (which is not at all glazed, but quite yummy).
The nutritional information, again, is stellar: from information about each surgery, the various macro-nutrients, vitamins and minerals, food labels, and information on success and weight regain, this book is exceptionally complete. I would not buy this book for the recipes alone, but rather for the information in the first half of the book, which I have continually referenced back to.

Excellent book for WLS patients!,
This review is from: The Complete Idiot's Guide to Eating Well After Weight LossSurgery (Mass Market Paperback)
After having weight loss surgery last summer I heard about this book and so I bought it and I was absolutely thrilled with it! This book contains a lot of helpful infromation to what to expect after WLS and information on nutrition and delicious recipes-many of which are made for 1 serving!
This book is broken into four parts: Part 1:What to expect after Surgery This talks about not only the surgery itself but information on things like Carbs,Sugars, Proteins and Vitamins Part 2:Demystifying Food labels and Nutrition Buzzwords Finally a simple explanation on what you should be looking at! Part 3:Ensuring your continued success Strategies for winning at weight loss, setting yourself up for success and weight regain and other red flags & how to get back on track Part 4:Recipes for eating well after weight loss surgery From Breakfast through Dessert, including snacks! I personally found the third section to be especially helpful. Within all four parts I learned a lot, and it has helped me adjust to the new lifestyle that comes with WLS, and the recipes themselves are healthy, simple to follow, they use easily obtainable ingredients and really delicious. I believe this book is a must have for those who have had WLS and even for those considering WLS as you can prepare yourself for your new eating habits.

The Complete Idiot's guide to Eating Well After Weight Loss Surgery exceeded my expectations! The recipes are creative, delicious, and there are many offering a wonderful array of vegetables as well. And the chicken dishes are among my favorites. As a bonus, not only was I able to make delicious meals for myself and my whole family, but I also received clear and concise answers to everything from types of fats and the differences between them to really understanding food labels.
Thank you for this wonderful book! It is not only for those who have had weight loss surgery, but also for their family members and friends!

Husband's Nutritionist said "Excellent Book for Him",
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Complete Idiot's Guide to Eating Well After Weight LossSurgery (Mass Market Paperback)
My husband is in the process of getting ready for GBS surgery in 2011; The first step is seeing a nutritionist monthly so when I gave him this book he took it with him to his appointment. We wanted to make sure she agreed with the author. She hasnt read this book but she did recognize the author and highly approves. She looked at the chapters and found a few for him to concentrate on now.
So if you looking for a good book in this area you might try getting this and taking it to your medical professional. I was so happy to hear I made a good choice.
