5.0 out of 5 stars Humorous and Educational, January 31, 2001
By
Grand Inquisitor (Delray, Michigan USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Complete Idiot's Guide to Adobe(R) Photoshop(R) 6 (Paperback)
I must say that I was pleasantly surprised. Photoshop 6 can be intimidating for anything but the more basic applications. This book helped me expand the possibilities of my creativity. Every other Photoshop book I've read put me to sleep when they discussed color, the "Color Your World" chapter, actually made sense and taught me how to use the color options effectively. The humor in the book (chapter titles and random statements smattered throughout) were an added treat (except for the one about carnival workers...grrr). All in all, an exceptional tool for anyone who thinks they already know how to use Photoshop 6 and a must for anyone just starting out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great series, great guide for a great piece of software, February 5, 2001
This review is from: The Complete Idiot's Guide to Adobe(R) Photoshop(R) 6 (Paperback)
I have to say I slightly prefer the "Complete Idiot's" guides rather than the "for Dummies" series although I think both titles are regrettable. (Is it a complete guide for idiots, or a guide for complete idiots?) And how can you be an idiot or dummy if you are bound and determined to learn something and willing to spend your good money doing it? Sounds smart to me. Nevertheless....

This book is very very useful. Photoshop is difficult! The more powerful the software, the more difficult to use. And some of the more arcane features of the software are important to get to know, like managing color (especially useful if you do web publishing or digital photography.) This part of the book is worth the price alone.

All in all, you can't go wrong if you want to learn Photoshop. If you don't mind the silly Idiot title (isn't this getting a bit old by now?) you'll have a highly useful resource to get started doing some great things.

2.0 out of 5 stars Five stars?!? I don't think so...., June 16, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: The Complete Idiot's Guide to Adobe(R) Photoshop(R) 6 (Paperback)
All I can say is that I am into chapter five, and still have no idea how to use Photoshop well enough to draw a happy face! This book seems to be going on about endless boring applications for Photoshop and saying very little about how to actually use the program. For instance, its going on about how to share files between Mac's and PC's, and all the potential pit falls (missing file extensions etc) before even getting into actually using Photoshop. Hello?! I just want to know how to use the program first, then worry about that stuff later (for God sakes, I'm never going to be sharing files with a Mac, so get on with it!) If you want to read about RLE Compession Scheme's and BMP Format Performance, but not even know how to draw a circle or use layers, then this is the book for you. If want a book that is going to get you up and running on how to use Photoshop, look elsewhere as I will have to do.
