Book Description

May 4, 2010 The Complete Idiot's Guide
A thorough examination of a misunderstood condition.

Though it's traditionally thought of as a childhood disorder, a growing body of research is bringing awareness to the fact that ADHD often continues into adulthood, though its symptoms often take on a different form and make the disorder more difficult to diagnose.

•Covers what ADHD looks like in adults, how symptoms can vary greatly from one person to the next, and how it often gets misdiagnosed

•Includes information on related conditions that often coexist with adult ADHD, including depression and anxiety

•Discusses various treatment options-pharmaceutical, behavioral, lifestyle, and alternative approaches

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Informative Book May 22, 2010
Format:Paperback
I was diagnosed with ADHD about 2 years ago and haven't been coping so well so I went looking for more info and came across this book. I found it very straight forward and the information was "ADHD friendly" with an easy to follow style. There is info on all different aspect of living with adult ADHD. I found the chapters on the workplace and relationships to be quite beneficial and I even started using some of the tips for work already (I've only had this book for about a week). I would definitely suggest this book as a resource for adults with ADHD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally...answers. June 3, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I just got diagnosed with ADHD. When being confronted with symptoms, looking backwards, sort of like A Christmas Carol. Ghost of Christmas Past, Christmas Present, and the Spector of Christmases Yet To Be. Overwhelming, scary, and more questions you can deal with in a month of twice-a-week therapy. I am a process engineer and I couldn't even figure out where to start asking questions. So I downloaded this book for my Kindle. I wanted answers and I wanted them NOW!!! Well I got them. I digested this book in one sitting, and am convinced I will be using it as a reference for years to come.

What ground do they cover? Clear, easy to understand sections on:

- Types of ADHD
- Treatments - medicine, and traditional and alternative types of therapy
- ADHD coaching
- Types (grouped in very logical, orderly categories) of symptoms
- Differences between ADHD at various life stages, with coping behaviors
- Differences between men and women, with coping behaviors
- Relationships, personal and in the work place
- Communcation, personal and in the work place

And each section discusses symptoms, ways to recognize them, and suggestions for starting to deal with them.

One of my favorite books of all time is "The Elements of Style," by Strunk and White. They got English grammar, style, and usage down to less than 110 pages in a very small book. I call it my 100K a year book because of the practical impact it had on my life, and my earning capacity. I think I will be referring to this book as my "million dollar a year, finally got a life" book. Thanks to the authors for helping save my life.

Highly recommend for people who just found out they have ADHD, coming to terms with it, and friends, lovers, and family of those with this disease. I think of the problems our whole family had because I had this disease before there was even a name for it - arguments, chaos, beatings and frustrated parents who didn't know how to control me. Teachers that thought I was lazy, crying myself to sleep to the sound of fighting parents - if they'd only had this book things would have been so much different. This book can help.

If you have just discovered you have ADHD, a relative or a friend has it, this is one of the best books available to get quick and easy to understand information. Eileen Bailey and Donald Haupt, M.D. have done an outstanding job of tackling, compiling and describing information about ADHD - even going so far as to discuss, clarify and debunk many of the various rumors and myths about ADHD. Adult ADHD is real and one of the most important and beneficial ways of coping with ADHD is to learn as much about it as you can - this is a great book to start your journey. As an author of 3 books about my experiences with ADHD I can confidently say I know a thing or two about this disorder. And still, I found much helpful information within the pages of this Guide which helped me expand my awareness and understanding of ADHD.

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Adult ADHD is a valuable addition to anyone's library with concern to ADHD.
