Am preparing for an exam on the Old Testament. This was one of the recommended references. It is an excellent resource; easy to read and understand. The authors do not go into different theologys but present the work in a clear, concise, entertaining, and fascinating way. Although I am the one taking the exam, my spouse is enjoying the book as much as I am. Highly recommend!

The Complete Idiot's Guide to the Bible is one of approximately 30 titles in the "Complete Idiot's" Series on religion.

The "Idiot Series" is a publication of the Penguin Group.

James S. Bell Jr. is the owner of Whitestone Communications and has served as executive editor of Moody Press and director of religious publishing at Doubleday. He is the author, co-author, and editor/compiler of numerous books, including The Complete Idiot's Guide to the Bible, the Book of Revelation, and the Reformation and Protestantism. He is also editor of the Christian Family Guide series from Alpha Books.

Stan Campbell has authored almost 40 books. He has been a full-time writer in Christian publishing for 15 years and has worked in church ministry for more than 20 years.

Surprisingly, neither author has had extensive formal Bible training. So to ensure biblical and academic accuracy for The Complete Idiot's Guide to the Bible, they relied on Richard L. Schultz, Associate Professor of Old Testament at Wheaton College (M.Div. from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, Ph.D. [in Old Testament] from Yale University) and Jane M. Vogel, writer and editor (M.C.E. from Calvin Theological Seminary).

The authors' intend Idiot's Guide as a starting point in reading the Bible for help with personal problems or just to satisfy curiosity. Their strategy is to reduce the Bible's intimidation factor. Guide is not designed as a substitute for Bible reading, but rather as a supplement to it. The authors therefore seek to direct readers to passages, stories, and people most pertinent to those not well-acquainted with scripture. Their focus is less on interpretation than on simply helping people see clearly what the Bible actually says.

I was very disappointed in it. The pericope sections are just restatements with very simplistic explanations. It didn't open up the Bible for me in any way and I can't imagine making my Sunday School class suffer through it. I recommend The Complete Idiot's Guide Bible Study for Teens -- it is much more interesting and has more information to help open up the Bible. And you don't have to be a teen. I bought this version because I couldn't imagine having adults use a teen book. But the teen book is much more interesting, with so much more information. Good luck in your search for helpful Bible resources. I'd honestly skip this one, though.

This very book is what introduced me to the Holy Bible. I had never read the Bible and it was determined to know what it was about (no childhood religious background). It was the first step I took on the road to discovering the wonderful stories and miracles and perfect examples of what God expects from us as His children. I needed basic Bible introduction and this book worked for me (hand-in-hand with a Bible to look up and check the accuracy of the Scriptures.

This book was a great learning tool. It does not take religion seriously but does get you started on learning
names, history and about people in the bible. It gives you information about members of a family for instance
and let's you know how to take it further. It is kind of light hearted and very easy to read but if you are
looking for deep religion then don't go here. For beginners it's wonderful.

Very easy to understand and extremely useful for a bible study. I have purchased and downloaded a lot of tools to use for my weekly Bible study, and I find that this is a terrific book!
