Cool Ways to Communicate Online probably shouldn't have tried to cover the basics of Web-page creation techniques as briefly as it does--other books are more effective. And some techniques for applying fancy formatting to e-mail messages detailed in the book will seem simplistic to many readers. But this book does a fine job when discussing how to incorporate an automatically updated Webcam image into a Web page, and how to use e-mail broadcast software to quickly (and ethically) distribute newsletters and other mailings to large lists of addresses. The text tends to gloss over the technical details of some software (such as Net2Phone and CU-SeeMe), but it's enough to inspire the reader to seek out more detailed information as it's needed. --David Wall
